Made my first contact ever and it was 1,200 miles!

I got my tech + general license over the course of 2 weeks, did tons of
reading about antennas and rigs and then off I went setting up my Yaesu
FT991A with a horizontal dipole (I think?) raised 10 on each end for NVIS.
I thought Id be maxing out at 300 miles at best. I lurked on 40 meters for
a few days and then randomly came across a DX net (on 40m) and decided to
join. The net operator was able to hear me loud and clear from NY! I am
amazed, and also bewildered that my signal was able to go so far despite
being explicitly set up for NVIS. I wonder whats actually going on with the radiation pattern. 40 meter band and only 10 high. Im using the CHA Ecomm
    II.
Exciting day for me, everyone Ive told (family / friends) are also amazed.
What is the relationship between my ability to hear others and their
ability to hear me? Does my ability to hear a station make it more likely
that I can hear them? submitted by /u/transmissionfactory

WWYD with 1k to spend in the shack?

As the question states, what would you do with $1,000 (or so) to spend on
    the shack?
Assume you already have a power supply, a Radio, 40/20/10 and 10-160 end
fed antennas, 800 watt amp. VHF is covered with a transverter and a
vertical dipole as well as an elk antenna. No UHF (not really used in my
    area).
Whats next on the shopping list?

Question T8A12: Which of the following is a disadvantage of FM compared
    with single sideband?
Answer: Only one signal can be received at a time
Can someone explain what this means? Isnt SSB only one signal also?

Advice please, adapters for VX-6 to use earpiece.

    Posted: 16 May 2022 10:01 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/urex3g/advice_please_adapters_for_vx6_to_use_earpiece/

With everyones help Ive been able to acquire a Yaesu VX-6 but I prefer to
use earpieces for my hts. Im a fan of the c shape earpieces. I have plenty
of Motorola ones and a few Kenwood ones. Can anyone recommend an adapter
for the vx-6? A modular adapter would be even better so I can use one
earpiece with multiple radios. submitted by /u/zac_in_ak
