What type of interference is this?

    Posted: 15 May 2022 06:24 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uqkfs9/what_type_of_interference_is_this/

So the other day a few users on our repeater were having the same problem.
The first few seconds of a transmission were fine but there would be this rapidly-building interference until the transmission was completely washed
out with static. The time from beginning to detect some interference,
through the parabolic increase of the static, to being completely washed
    out, was maybe three seconds.

Ham Achievement Unlocked - 1st NMO mount installed!

    Posted: 15 May 2022 08:39 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uq8ob9/ham_achievement_unlocked_1st_nmo_mount_installed/

Have to do a little bit of bragging. After two decades as a ham in which I never felt confident enough to drill a hole in my car myself, I finally did
it. They say that YouTube can teach you anything and in this case, its
true. There are plenty of good how -tos out there.
    The NMO installed
The setup is a West Mountain Radio Epic PWRGate charging a 20Ah LiFePo4
under the passenger seat, powering an IC-7100, and a Raspberry Pi 4 to run DigiPi for digital modes. Wont be drilling a hole for an HF antenna -
really not a good place on this vehicle - but I will be going HF mobile
with the good old Diamond K-400 and a Little Tar Heel II on the hatch lid.
Most of the gear was 100% repurposed from other ham projects. If youre skeptical about installing things like this, take it from me, with a bit of patience and a whole weekend even a noob like me can do it!

    Hello!
I’ve been a ham for about a year now, I’ve always done scanning with my Yaesu VX-6. I’m looking for a new set up for local signals, and I figured an SDR would be good due to the waterfall. The main thing I’m looking for is
the price being under $200. Being able to access HF without any extra
modules is a plus, and maybe being able to decode P25, NXDN, Etc. I was
looking at the SDRplay, any other suggestions? submitted by /u/Start_Transmission_

On the top section, Im planning on installing a flat top thrust bearing and rotator plate, so it seems like just cutting that extra 10 section in half would be a viable choice. However the cut end wouldnt be galvanized, etc.

    Help me pick...

    Posted: 15 May 2022 05:31 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uq5413/help_me_pick/

I currently have GMRS set up, which, thanks to you fine folks, is
operational and great as of now. I only have a BF-F8HP right now for
UHF/VHF and would like to complete my Gen and get HF as well. I dont know
what I like, nor do I have a radio other than HT, so I dont want to spend
$2500 without making sure. I know people dont like "all band" or "all mode" because of the depreciation factor of internal components running such a
split difference etc when a single purpose radio will be better; however,
so far, Im not impressed with the repeaters or the people. Theyre
unfriendly and its all a big emergency services inside club here. I joined ARES, didnt help. Went to meeting, left because it was some guy selling
crap on a Zoom call and no one interacting.
With that in mind, I know Im new etc and you have to establish yourself but
for the time being, I want to be able to do digital, IHF, VHF, HF in as few steps as possible with as few radios as possible. Enter Yaesu FT991A, the
only comparable model I can find is an ICOM 705 and its only 10W compared
to 100. Am I making the best choice? What else is offered that is similar because I see nothing with the same capabilities.
The repeaters etc here are system fusion and echolink for anything digital
but they seem to all be off except for when the clubs turn them on once a
week or so, so I guess I need a Hotspot which I know nothing about and
doesnt look like you can just buy one. I dont understand Raspberry Pi and
im probably now on a first grade conputer level it seems after researching this. I run windows 10.
I plan on getting antennas for HF/VHF (20 moonraker and 5 fiberglass),
external tuner, connection cable kits, software, and SCU17 to make digital
and USB functions available. What else do I need etc to make this smooth? Thanks, 73 KQ4ADO submitted by /u/cowboy615

Yaesu FTDX10 Review one week later

    Posted: 14 May 2022 02:02 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/upqck8/yaesu_ftdx10_review_one_week_later/

Hello r/amateurradio!I thought I would get on today to give my review of
the Yaesu FTDX-10 HF/60m Transceiver. I bought this rig last week from DXEnginnering in store and decided to write up a review for people thinking
of this rig, or just are in the market for something new.
I anticipate this will be a long post so here is a TLDR:Yaesu has
absolutely hit this radio out of the park. They positioned this to compete
with the Icom IC-7300 and they absolutely are holding nothing back against
the 7300. This radio has been an absolute dream to use. I primarily operate weak signal digital modes, and the receiver on this is a game changer. I
easily am able to pull out weak signals from the noise floor and still make contacts. My previous rig would have missed all of these signals. If you
are in the market for a rig, I highly recommend this!

    Long review time!
A few months ago, my previous HF rig broke. It was a Xiegu G90. My antenna
is a magloop I use indoors (due to a restricted space environment), and I
was tuning it, then it just stopped outputting RF power. Nothing I did
brought it back, so rig was considered dead. Which put me in the market for
    a new rig.
I originally never heard of the Yaesu FTDX-10. And in all honesty, I never really considered Yaesu as an option before. Generally, it was because in
my price range they didnt really offer anything I was interested in. Back
story for me I got into ham radio because of SDR and I "grew up" in a sense
by looking at waterfall graphs and FFTs. So, a pure digital display I could
not easily get used to, and I didnt have the money or space for a higher
tier radio. However, a local hamfest has one of these as the grand raffle
prize which made me look into it more. I was in the market for a new radio.
And decided to look into this rig more. After weeks of research, it quickly became my #1 choice. I was also seriously considering the Icom IC-7300
However, at this time the radio is out of stock everywhere. Because of that FTDX10 was really the only option.
Last week instead of ordering the rig online, I drove a 6-hour round trip
to DXEngineering In Tallmadge, OH. One of their two retail locations is in Ohio, and I wanted to visit to see the rig in person before I actually buy anything. It was also a nice way to get out of the house for a day. The
staff there were super helpful. I told them what I was looking at and they helped stear me in the right direction. I also needed to get a proper power supply as well (I had gotten a generic (no idea model) unit for my g90 with power poles and didnt have a real power supply. I tried to throw things together quickly. Not correctly) and ultimately got an Alinco DM-430T unit. Overall happy with that unit. Got the order for both filled the same day,
just had to wait a bit for the folks at Summit Racing (Where DXEngineering store in inside) to pick out the parts. And I was on my way. As a bonus
    they gave me a hat!
Onto the radio. The first thing that strikes me is the interface. It is
very clean and even though this is a "compact" radio it doesnt hide things
in an over complex menu system. Which is excellent. The important things
for operation are front and center with the FUNC button. For day-to-day operation you wont need to go past that. Below that are more rig
configuration options largely that wont need to be touched. I really
appreciate how this is laid out. An issue I had with my previous rig was
the menu system was confusing, and when I was away from it for a while or a firmware update wiped my settings I needed to relearn its navigation.
Multiple buttons opened different menus it was a mess. The nice single top
menu for most things is extremely refreshing. In addition the Custom Select function for the outer ring is truly genius! I can put a commonly used
setting onto that and always have it available without needing to even open
the menu. And when that function is disabled, quickly allows me to scan
through the band. I absolutely love using it!
Next the display is a much-welcomed upgrade! As I mentioned previously SDR
is what got me into ham radio. I enjoy watching signals on the FFT &
Waterfall graphs as I would hunt signals on my RTLSDR for hours on end in
years past. Having the large screen does not disappoint at all. I can
clearly read the screen and make out what is going on. The waterfall is
nice and readable. As a bonus the DVI port on the back lets me connect to
an external monitor. As I understand it the reason for DVI is because HDMI requires royalties to integrate and sell equipment with it (correct me if
Im wrong). Honestly it isnt a bother using a DVI over HDMI I just needed to
get an adapter. Still having a radio under $2k with an external display is something Ive never seen before. And It absolutely makes operating nicer to
see everything on a bigger screen. I guess a gripe is that it doesnt
support full HD. But its not a deal breaker for me.
With this Yaesu talks about the "Hybrid SDR" architecture. And honestly,
they have every reason to stick to their guns and run with it. There is no reason for them to abandon this architecture, if anything they should
double down on it. The execution with this is superb! Sure its not a "pure" direct sampling SDR. But that really isnt an issue here. I like how they combine mechanical filters with SDR signal processing, theyve made both complement each other very well here. While I say SDR is the future, it
doesnt mean the old should just be thrown out. And Yaesu has demonstrated
that very well with this rig.
I exclusively operate low power digital modes. And I have never enjoyed operating this much. Firstly I can finally put away my signalink box! To connect to a computer the FTDX10 just uses a single USB-B port for audio
and rig control! The way it cleans up my station is so nice. I accepted the signalink and extra CAT cable as a necessary evil. But I didnt like the
cable mess that my station was. That alone is a major improvement to my operating. Additionally it is nice to own a radio that is finally a
recognized option and not having to imitate other rigs. I use a variety of software, but primarily it is HRD+DM780 & Winlink Express + VaraHF. The receiver on this is superb. Even without looking a the sherwood report is
truly a cut above the rest. I routinely am able to make contacts with
signals buried in the noise floor I cant even see. But the receiver on this easily just digs the signal out and I can clearly decode it. On my previous
rig these are signals would have otherwise missed. For example the other
night I was able to make contacts on PSK31, Contesta, FieldHell and JS8.
Most of these didnt even show up on the waterfall, but I was still able to receive and make contacts. My antenna has a max power of 25w and I have the radio set to a max output of 25. However, these were all made with 20w or
less. Oter things such as the notch and shift I havent used extensively.
But I have tested a bit and wow they work.
This part should get its own section to not get buried. The digital noise reduction mode. Is absolutely phenomenal! It completely eliminates static
from the signal and really just quiets everything down. I usually leave
this on and forget that I turned it on. At the start it can make things too quite when it is adjusting itself. But once it gets used to the signal all
you will hear is the signal, and noting else.
Some other miscellaneous things. This does have support for a full sized
SDCard (Pretty rare these days. I havent had one in years). I have a 32gb Sandisk extreme plus working fine in it. (I wanted a gold card to match the Yaesu text. This card is probably overkill. But I dont mind)
Overall Yaesu has done an excellent job on this radio. It is clear they are targeting the Icom IC-7300 from the feature set to interface. Honestly
after a week of ownership. If both were in stock and I had to choose again.
I would pick the Yaesu no questions asked. Bonus points because you can actually find a FTDX10 in stock. By the time I bought this 7300 was nowhere
to be found in any outlet I knew of. I am curious to see if Icom responds
to this with a IC-7400. As well if Kenwood would make a similar radio. It
is nice to see the big expensive HF rigs. But I consider the price bracket
the FTDX10 and 7300 are in is the "sweet spot". Not a crazy expensive
contest rig (Also looking in store I absolutely have no space for those
rigs. They are massive!), but a very solid rig you can use very day and
enjoy it. I will say in using the rig, it is honestly the most fun Ive had
with radio since I originally discovered the RTLSDR years ago. I am toughly enjoying using it, and I cannot wait to operate it even more! I easily can recommend this radio to people. This was worth every bit what I paid for
it! And well worth the drive up to visit DXEngineering!
Thank you for reading and 73,
    KE8GAH
