Australian travelling to the US - are we allowed to bring our 2 way radios
to use?
Posted: 11 May 2022 05:08 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/unnsn8/australian_travelling_to_the_us_are_we_allowed_to/
Hi Gurus
New to the sub and I have a question. I love in Australia and the use of 2
way radios is prevalent.
I currently own a pair of Uniden 5 watt (UH 850S) handheld radios and use
them when to maintain communications between vehicles, be it for leisure or work.
I am travelling to Chicago Illinois for a family holiday and would like to bring these along with me.
My question is would these 2 way radios be allowed? Furthermore has anyone
had any experience clearing airport security and boarding international
fights with this equipment?
Also where can I find information regarding what channels are available for
use whilst in the States? submitted by /u/luvsging

radio interface from car radio antenna??

I off road with my jeep and use a handheld bowfang radio that has severe
static when the vehicle is running. Cant get rid of it with the squelch. Suspect its the jeep radio because when my rear view camera is activated
the static stops on the handheld. Could it be my jeep radio antenna that is causing it or something else? If it is the radio antenna what do you
recommend? submitted by /u/deathcraft1

Club license not appearing on ULS renewal screen
Posted: 11 May 2022 07:50 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/unqxb5/club_license_not_appearing_on_uls_renewal_screen/
Im the trustee for our local club. The club license K6TZ is up for renewal
on August 4, 2022. I tried logging in to the ULS and renewing, however,
despite being less than 90 days before license expiration, the callsign
does not show up on the "Select Licenses" screen. Am I missing something
silly or is this likely a problem on the FCC site side?
Edit: this is a screen capture of the "Select Licenses" screen in the clubs

Mic mounting solution

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/unrtrw/mic_mounting_solution/
I was at a loss as to where in my Truckasaurus to put a hanger for the microphone. The hook that came with the radio soooo long ago wouldnt keep
the mic in place on rough roads. There wasnt any convenient place to put something better without drilling holes in the dash or console. Upon
consulting the chrono synclastic infundibulum I came upon a solution. Or
should I say I was attracted to it. I got a rare earth magnet and super
glued it to the metal bracket on the mic. Problem solved! Uh not really. It took 2 to make it not bounce off and have a stable attachment point. Now I
can grab the mic without taking my eyes off the road and hang it back up
too.
The black marks on the magnets are for alignment purposes. Opposites
attract.

First HF radio purchase

I am getting my general license on Monday and was going to wait until
afterward to pick up my first HF Radio. Today a friends father let me know
he was getting rid of some equipment. The piece I am considering is a Ken
wood TS-850S with a PS-52 power supply. The 850 is a lte model with a
60xxxxxx model number. Is this a good radio to get or should I look at something different? submitted by /u/poopsmcclintock

my guess. Calculated Industries 5070? submitted by /u/BarefootT

Vanity Callsign questions

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/unesc0/vanity_callsign_questions/
Hi All
got my license about a month ago and want to apply for a vanity call sign.
Have a few questions:
Can I get a 2x3 vanity call sign (technician class), or does it have to be
a 1x3?
Can i change any geographic region (in US). Currently i live in Illinois,
so I have KU9XXX. Im about to start a new job that is 100% remote, so Im selling my house and will be living in an RV full time. Do I have to stick
with 9 (or a number that matches my domiciled state)?
Thanks

The Yaesu SSM-57A is $42 shipped from Amazon. $49 shipped from HRO. Is
there a less expensive option that works just as well? Seems like a lot of money for a simple mic/earpiece. submitted by /u/ScoutCommander

I need VRX-5000 Programming cable pinout and software

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ungsaq/i_need_vrx5000_programming_cable_pinout_and/
Hello,
Im TA4ABJ from Turkey and Im creating this post on behalf of our club TRAC Denizli branch YM4KB as I am the only English speaker in the club.
One of the two local repeaters we have in our city which is a Vertex
VRX-5000 needs to be programmed and we are lacking the programming cable
and the software. While I was searching on the internet I have found some pinout schemes but they are not very well explained and in some I have seen them using max232. Are there anyone that is experienced in these devices
that could help us with the cable and the software?
Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/Turkista

In the market for a radio
Posted: 11 May 2022 09:33 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/undwfh/in_the_market_for_a_radio/
Hello!
I live in Southern Norway, and spend a lot of my time outdoors.
Oftentimes weve found ourselves wanting a way to communicate when we are outside fishing/hunting/foraging. I have had really bad walkie talkies in
the past, and also have a set of handsets my friend in the army provided us (they are really old, and range is at most 300 meters).
Ive been trying to research which ones are worth buying online, but with limited knowledge of the world of radio communication, there are several different models that look nice, but Im sure there are some drawbacks to
most of them.
I would really like either double/triple A batteries for easy swapping in
the field, or rechargeable with a cable (not a cradle).
Another important factor would be durability and at least some manner of water resistance.
The Motorola T82 Extreme has come up several places, but I also read
several reviews mentioning lackluster VOX and voice quality.
Any suggestions/insights into this world of which I know nothing about
would be greatly appreciated. submitted by /u/tyfferegle
