Having fun calling CQ on 2m/70cm, simplex and repeaters

    Posted: 11 May 2022 07:13 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/unat78/having_fun_calling_cq_on_2m70cm_simplex_and/

Hello everyone! Im a new tech. I want to encourage you all to make some
noise on the air. Call CQ on 2m simplex. Call it off a repeater. Talk into
the void - there are people listening who like to hear. I have made some
decent Simplex contacts on my side of town from my HTs
There is absolutely no point in maintaining and promoting radio silence.
Should you be polite? Sure! Ask if repeaters are in use. Ask to join in a conversation. But get on 146.52 and talk your head off. Get on that club repeater and start talking. Sometimes I use calling CQ as an excuse to say whatever is on my mind. Who cares? This is not professional radio.
Heres my recent script, based off this advice:
"CQ CQ, calling SEEK-YOU on the 2 meter band! This is Kilo-Foxtrot-Zero-Juliet-Bravo-Papa, coming at you from the East side of
Des Moines over by the Fairgrounds. Just got my technician ticket and
looking for some simplex contacts. This is Kay-Eff-Zero-Jay-Bee-Pee calling
    CQ on the 2m band"
Just have some fun with it. Pretend to be a disc jockey. Pretend to not
care what listeners think. I love having active ham bands. I drink my
morning coffee listening to two dudes chat on a repeater. Theres some drama going on. Good stuff!
Most importantly though - if you dont use it, you lose it. If we dont use
the public airwaves / transportation / schools / libraries / utilities, we
WILL lose them. So be the change you want to see. Call CQ on the 2m band! submitted by /u/RadiosGunsAndScience

What is the least I can spend to get on H.F.?

    Posted: 11 May 2022 06:32 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/un9xze/what_is_the_least_i_can_spend_to_get_on_hf/

What is the least amount of money I can spend to get on H.F.?
That would include radio, tuner, balum, wire.
My friend says an MFJ 16010 (traditional tuner) is about $105
A remote tuner MFJ 926B is about $260
    A balum is typically $40 to $90.
Radio tuner $200/$400. The remote type is about $300/400. submitted by /u/EnergyLantern

2M HT - Emergency Response Radio

    Posted: 11 May 2022 08:47 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uncv0x/2m_ht_emergency_response_radio/

Ive been working on putting together a emcomm-ish bag and as Im doing
research online Ive noticed that several of emcomm/go-bag/emergency
response equipment lists have "2M HT" on their lists. Is there a purpose to
a 2M HT vs Dual-Band? Or is it that the 2M is some sort of unofficial
emergency response HT of choice? Just curious and thanks in advance. 73! submitted by /u/j00nk

House Took a Direct Hit - How to test possible Lightning Damage?

    Posted: 11 May 2022 09:12 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/undfod/house_took_a_direct_hit_how_to_test_possible/

About 3 weeks after purchasing and installing an FT891 and and IC-2730A in
my home shack my house was struck by lightning - direct hit.
Both radios were unplugged a the time - from power and antenna.
But they were sitting physically close to where the strike came in the
house, less than a foot away.
Both seem to be functional, but I cant shake the feeling that they arent working as well as they were before.
I cant tell if this is my imagination, propagation conditions, or actual
damage and Im too new of a ham to know how to tell or how to test properly. e.g. 2730: On 2M I cant hit a specific distant repeater that I was easily getting before, but my local simplex contacts sound normal
e.g. FT891: When trying to hunt POTA stations they almost all sound like
they are deep in the noise floor, like 4-5 to 4-7. my selective memory says
it was clearer before. Yet I made a very clear US to Europe contact on 17M yesterday.

    Speakermic not keying up radio

    Posted: 11 May 2022 08:51 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uncyco/speakermic_not_keying_up_radio/

I got an SSM-17H speakermic to use with my Yaesu VX-6 The speaker works
fine on it, however the push to talk button will not key up the radio. Is
there something that Im doing wrong or a setting that I need to enable to
use the PTT button on the speakermic? Or is it just not compatible with the VX-6, If so what speakermic should I use with it? submitted by

Full wave loop antenna advice sought

    Posted: 11 May 2022 07:24 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/unb1lu/full_wave_loop_antenna_advice_sought/

I have been give the opportunity to test a full wave loop with a military
HF radio set. This particular set has an external automatic antenna tuner
that you couple directly between the end of the coax and the antenna
itself. I understand why this feature is desirable but it presents
something of a quandary when coupling it to a full wave loop. Specifically,
the tuner is too heavy to attach directly to the antenna in the air, and
the output of the coupler is 50 Ohm unbalanced. Obviously I would like to
feed the loop with balanced ladder line. I see two obvious course of
actions I can follow here and I would appreciate the communities input on
    them.
COA 1: Use a short run of coax ( ≈ 1 meter) between the radio and the
antenna tuner, a long run of coax from the antenna tuner to the antenna,
and an appropriate balun to couple the coax to the antenna. |RADIO|--coax--{TUNER}---------coax-------<BALUN ?:?>(ANTENNA)
COA 2: Use the long run of coax that is provided with the kit between the
tuner and the radio, a run of 450 Ohm ladder line up to the antenna with a
9:1 balun between the tuner and the ladder line. |RADIO|-------coax-------{TUNER}<BALUN 9:1>======ladder
    line=========(ANTENNA)
I like the second one best but what do you think? Am I out the lunch
    here? submitted by /u/Turingrad
