Just moved to a new area and one of my neighbours has this massive

How fast do commercially available VHF scanners find a transmission?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2022 07:33 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u5o9a3/how_fast_do_commercially_available_vhf_scanners/

Folks, Im very new to radio so please bear with me if the question doesnt
make a lot of sense and please point me to the right direction.
Lets say we have a normally available scanner like Uniden UBC-75XLT. If
there is occasional transmission on an unknown frequency within the 136-174
MHz range (lets say its NFM modulation), how long will it take for a
scanner like this to find that transmission?
Im a bit lost here because the manuals say that the scanner scans its
channels, not the whole band. Does it mean that if the unknown frequency
isnt included in the scanners channels, its not going to find it at all? Or
can the scanner tune into the frequency if its near enough to one of its preprogrammed channels?
Does the amount of traffic and session length on the frequency matter? What about more expensive scanners, at which price point does scanning the whole range become feasible, if its not available on any device?
Thanks a lot in advance! submitted by /u/CyrillicMan

    Radios for international travel?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2022 12:47 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u5un9f/radios_for_international_travel/

Going on a trip with my girlfriend to Iceland soon, and was wondering if
there are any laws regarding radio use there for hiking. I have only ever
used radios for work (we use Motorolas in EMS) and was also looking at walkie-talkie type radios for less than $100 each. Neither of us are HAM licensed. Thoughts or advice? Thanks! submitted by /u/Wicked_Smaht617

Mobile install: extend power or antenna cable?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2022 03:34 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u5y1iv/mobile_install_extend_power_or_antenna_cable/

Doing my first mobile install, and I bought a diamond K400S for my mount.
Turns out its about 3 ft short of reaching where I was going to put my
    radio...
How bad would it be to buy an sma->sma extension cable? Or am I just asking
for more insertion loss? What about extending the power cable and moving
the radio? Or, is the right answer just get a longer cable that goes from
the antenna to the mount? submitted by /u/gimlithepirate

Hotspot issues... Normal to have to set offset in the 5590-5625 range?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2022 11:43 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u5td4x/hotspot_issues_normal_to_have_to_set_offset_in/

I bought a MMDVM board from Amazon a couple weeks ago, it works, but the
offset is waaaaaaay off, and I have to "fine tune" it every day or my BER
gets in the 2% range. (I can get it down about .5%, but itll only last for awhile. Ive confirmed with my SDR that its off frequency.
Is this common, or should I send this board back, Im thinking its got a bum TCXO on it, and its way off and drifting.
Ive reflashed the unit, And reset the Pi-star a few times. This is my
second one, the first one didnt transmit at all. Worth it to get a Lonestar board instead? submitted by /u/PinkertonFld

Anyone running a LoRa APRS iGate or digi out there?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2022 05:41 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u60iaw/anyone_running_a_lora_aprs_igate_or_digi_out_there/

WTF am I talking about? This.
I use APRS all the time. Yes, the capacity limitations are frustrating (I
wish it was more efficient like AIS) and the range is ... Well its ok but
    not awesome.
So Im thinking about putting together one or two or 12 of these and maybe depositing them in strategic locations where they will cover large areas of
my home state. Ammo-box deployments with a little solar panel should be
very achievable; antennas are small, power usage is low.
With the SK of Bob B, APRS is a little orphaned, but its also at a
potential turning point for its future.

    HT for digital?

Anyone have a recommendation on an HT that would be good for starting out
with digital? I was thinking FT8 would be a good starting point.
I was thinking about an HT for cost and also I had an idea to make a go-box
for it out of a raspberry pi to work with it (and an SRD). But I’m open to other ideas as well. submitted by /u/janre75

    Bluetooth functionality in car

    Posted: 17 Apr 2022 10:51 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u5sagg/bluetooth_functionality_in_car/

    Hi all
Recently got my technician license. And looking for (ideally handheld with aprs, Bluetooth and iOS programming and maps)
Was goi g to buy the yaesu ft5 and then heard the Bluetooth was garbage
(very basic profile and keeps the radio mic on when using Bluetooth)
I’ve used gmrs quite a bit with friends on road trips. The biggest pain is
I have music/audio book playing, hear a radio transmission and I have to
turn down volume, ask them to repeat, etc.
So my question is, if I get a radio with good Bluetooth, will it work like
a cell phone and mute the radio when a message comes in.
Also how does PTT work if you’re using Bluetooth devices?
    Thanks

Does anybody know how to work this vintage transceiver?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2022 08:45 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u5emn3/does_anybody_know_how_to_work_this_vintage/

While at a vintage store i picked up a Model T-1000C Fanon/Courier handheld transceiver, because i wanted to see if it still worked.
I installed the 10 double AA batteries it required and walked outside and turned it on. Honestly with the 6 foot antenna extended I wouldn’t have
been surprised to hear the ISS /s.
I was met with static that persisted no matter where i turned, however with
5 or so channels, the static dissipated if i turned towards a certain direction, different for each channel. The only thing I could slightly hear
was a gentle beeping sound under the static.
If anyone knows how to guide me or is familiar with this type of radio i
    would LOVE your help.
Tl:Dr, want some guidance with a handheld transceiver from 197(?)
