    Relationship between band and frequency

I am studying for my general class license and am trying to figure out the relationship between the bands and their frequencies. For example the 80
meter band (3.5 MHz) shows frequencies between 3500 and 4000 kHz. Is their
a formula that gets you from 80 meter to 3500 kHz? submitted by

    C4FM va DMR

    Posted: 18 Apr 2022 06:47 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u6dkmb/c4fm_va_dmr/

    Hello Everyone!
So I have a DMR radio (Anytone 878) and I just discovered the C4FM mode
because a friend of mine got a FT-5DR, I asked him what is C4FM but he said
he was busy and couldn’t explain it to me. So my question is what is the difference between and should I invest on the C4FM radio like the FT-5DR? Thanks and 73’ WP4BS submitted by /u/ThePilot20

Composing a broadcast with correct call-sign and prowords

    Posted: 18 Apr 2022 07:25 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u6eek7/composing_a_broadcast_with_correct_callsign_and/

    Hi /r/amateurradio,
Im writing my first novel, and the scene I am trying to write involves one
of my main characters sending out a general call for supplies and
assistance. The backstory here is that aid and contact with the authorities became intermittent, and eventually ceases entirely.
Rather than try and make up some half-baked radio sci-fi stuff, my
protagonist uses a Type 601C Transmitter.
Id like to try and get the terminology correct but I find the terminology a byzantine maze... if someone were to do a wide broadcast from an
observatory what is currently NE Greenland (in my setting, the western-most oblast/province of Russia), how would one go about composing a message that says Target recipient (in this case, Moscow) > from (source of broadcast) > request supplies and aid from the authorities.
Im sorry if this sounds so trivial it sounds ridiculous, but Id rather get
the wording correct for the call signs and the prowords.
Id be grateful for any assistance.
    Thanks! submitted by /u/photojacker

Need Antenna Help - I'm returning to ham radio. I don't have any antenna
mounts on this house. I would like to "work the world" but I don't know
what I can do with my house. Suggestions? I had a license 20 years ago
(Tech+) but let it expire and am working to retake the exam.

UK - Licensed two-way radio, family license?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2022 08:25 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u6fr6l/uk_licensed_twoway_radio_family_license/

At work weve tried license free pmr446 and have since upgraded to 5watt
version which seem to be offering the range for our family trips.
Im now looking at getting some 5w radios for family trips, however bit
confused over licensing in the UK.
The simple uk license looks suitable for 5w uhf radios, but, would every
person using the radios need this license or would just me as the owner
allow all of my family to use the radios?
    Many thanks! submitted by /u/Artistic-Sink-1510

Ive decided to learn morse code to start using CW. Im planning on relying mostly the app Morse Mania for iOS which uses both the Koch and Farnsworth method and learn copy first. Understanding that everybodys different, how
long has it taken any of you whove learned it to gain some amount of proficiency? How was transmitting when you were starting out? submitted

Anyone in the Peoria AZ area that would be interested in testing some Ham equipment for $$?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2022 05:48 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u60n7t/anyone_in_the_peoria_az_area_that_would_be/

Theres this guy in Arizona that wants to pay some hams to test some ham
    radio equipment.
I bought a Tuner off eBay which was listed as untested. It worked fine! The seller, it turns out, gets ham stuff often from bidding on storage units,
and doesnt know how to test them.
He was wondering if I knew anyone in his area that might be willing to test
the ham stuff hes trying to sell so he can sell them as working when they
work. He said hed be willing to pay.
I dont, but figured there might be some AZ Hams on here thatd be
interested! Not sure how much hed be paying or anything about him but seems like a nice guy looking for a knowledgeable enthusiest, haha.
If so I can give him your email via eBay to connect you.
Anyways, happy Easter to everyone! Comment or DM if youre interested.

Proper way to terminate outdoor coax for temporary installs?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2022 07:10 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u627iz/proper_way_to_terminate_outdoor_coax_for/

    Hey folks!
I’ll try to keep this as clear as I can, bare with me!
Setting up my “shack” in my home office. I can’t really do a permanent install outside so I’m going with the “Stuff I can setup and take down quickly” route. I’ve got a Buddstick Pro and a portable mast en route.
The plan is to run two RG8/U cables out to my back deck to where a
satellite dish used to be installed, using the same cable runs and existing holes.
Here’s my question: Since the antennas won’t ALWAYS be connected; what’s the proper way to terminate those cables? Is it as simple as a waterproof
cap of some kind? Or is there something else I should do to protect those cables when they aren’t “in use”? They’ll terminate UNDER the deck so they
won’t be totally exposed; but will experience some moisture, heat, and cold for sure.

    Faraday cage not working

    Posted: 17 Apr 2022 06:28 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u61f1l/faraday_cage_not_working/

Hello everyone! I’m trying to build a 2 meter pass-band filter, but I’m running into a strange issue.
I prototyped the filter on a solder-less breadboard, and that led to a lot
of unwanted signals getting through (the wires and traces were acting as antennas.) In order to solve that, I used an altoids tin and soldered wire
to the top and bottom halves. This wire is connected through to my
electrical ground. (And my spectrum analyzer ground.) In order to test it,
I put a small wire antenna into the box with 1.5mm of plastic around it,
and connected that to the input of my spectrum analyzer through a piece of coax.
However, I’m still receiving local radio signals. Without the antenna my spectrum analyzer (SA) reads no signal, so it isn’t a problem with the
coax. I checked my grounding connection with my multimeter and it was good. I’m stumped as to why a closed and grounded metal container is letting
radio signals through. Can someone explain why it isn’t working?

    Antenna help

    Posted: 17 Apr 2022 09:08 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u64c2t/antenna_help/

I’m in Chicago in a house where I can’t put a beam on the roof or a tower in the backyard, aside from that, I’m pretty much able to do anything that will fit within my backyard. My backyard has a medium size area that’s
about 33’ by 34’, then a strip where that 34’ goes to about 50’ but only 7’
wide. I have concrete on two sides, and a garage on another side. A couple
of low trees on the fence line. I’m currently using a bb7v, but I’m getting an amp and so I need to find a different antenna.
Would a vertical work with only 3 sides of radials and some of those quite short? I’d prefer (and my dog would prefer) I not put the antenna in the middle of the yard. Any other options? submitted by /u/txtreyg

    Verticals: pre-built vs home-brew

    Posted: 17 Apr 2022 07:24 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u62gvu/verticals_prebuilt_vs_homebrew/

Hey all. I want an vertical for 10 meters and CB. Should I build one my
self or is there enough of a benefit to a pre-built one? If I home-brew I
do have a NanoVNA and would make it out of copper pipe.
Also for local contacts is ground mounted fine or should I elevate it. I am tempted to ground mount it so I have one less antenna on my crowded roof.
