Questions about starting a school ham radio club

    Posted: 13 Apr 2022 12:06 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u2xs4e/questions_about_starting_a_school_ham_radio_club/

Im looking to start a ham radio club at my college next year, and I was
looking for some advice. I have the logistical parts, eg funding,
paperwork, etc. figured out, but there are some of the more subjective
things about actually operating the club that I am curious about. If you
have something to say or are knowledgeable about a topic, I would
appreciate an answer to any of these questions Who should be designated as
the clubs Trustee when getting a club license and (maybe) getting ARRL affiliation? Myself or a teacher? Concern is that if its the former, this
would need to change as people graduate. What are some pitfalls I should
try to avoid? What do you even do/talk about at meetings? I know people my
age have an incredibly short attention span, as well as the fact that many
are going to be busy with schoolwork. Time is a limited resource, so how do
I keep it interesting while still being brief? Is collaborating with non
school affiliated, local radio clubs something that I can do? Or is that
weird to ask of them? How do you reach out to people and introduce them to
the hobby and the club? Explaining what ham is has never been my strong
suite. I tend to overcomplicate things, make it seem intimidating.
If there are any existing resources for people looking to run clubs, beyond that of just getting the paperwork filled out, I would appreciate if you
can point me in the right direction.

    Question about crystal radio design

    Posted: 13 Apr 2022 06:47 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u366b8/question_about_crystal_radio_design/

I have a newbie question that may have a very simple answer, but strangely,
I cannot find it in any online explanation of crystal radio design, so I am seeking an answer from the kind folks here.
Virtually all crystal radio designs have what I understand to be an
inductor coil connected to the part of the circuit that connects to the antenna. That coil is rather small. It is placed next to a larger inductor
coil that is not in the same circuit and the first coil induces a current
in the second larger coil. That coil is connected to a capacitor (which can
be used for tuning) and a detector/diode that then sends the "chopped up"
    AM signal to the earpiece.
I think I understand why the detector is there (essentially to make the
current run just one way) and why the capacitor is there (to allow for
tuning, for example), but my question is this: why are inductor coils
needed at all, and particularly why are there two? It seems to me that
thats like a transformer and it is changing the voltage, but if so, for
what purpose? Is there any other reason for having induction coils in this setup?
Again, strangely, the videos and web pages Ive seen dont give a clear
answer to this question, even when they are rather extensive. I think that
they assume that people understand the principles involved when most of us probably dont.
Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/Metataphysika

HF transceiver for suboptimal antenna setups?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2022 06:20 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u35o25/hf_transceiver_for_suboptimal_antenna_setups/

    Hey folks!
Taking the general at the end of the month. Assuming I pass; next step is
    an HF transceiver.
My home situation is one where installing a permanent antenna isn’t really
an option so I’m researching temporary/portable/easy take down HF antenna solutions. I can get these about 10 feet off the ground at the highest
point; potentially a bit higher. I know that’s not ideal.
Are there certain transceivers better suited for that sort of thing? I know this is sort of a “better transceiver or better antenna” question. But should I be looking more specifically at certain models or features?

My Icom 5100s touch screen stopped working. It was going in and out for a
while now and now totally stopped working. I called Icom to see about the
fix and after rough estimates, I bet Im looking at a new screen for like
$125 plus .5-1 hour of labor at close to $100/hour plus shipping to and
from. Like I said rough estimate, I could be completely wrong. Talking with
the technical support if the screen is left in direct sunlight it can ruin.
He told me to take the display out of the sunlight before getting out of my vehicle. Should I be frustrated over this, let me say I am. The fact that
it could cost over half of the price of the mobile radio to have this
repaired. This is my first mobile radio and I never would have thought to remove it from my vehicle. Do any of yall remove your radio daily? Vehicles have had touch screens in them for years and I havent heard of this
    issue. submitted by /u/renegade87

I have a 20m hamstick. With an analyzer I can adjust the whip so that the
swr is less than 3 to 1 across the band. When I connect the hamstick to my
IC 7300, the radio wont "tune" it. Thus, the swr is too high to use.

    How lossy are pigtails?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2022 05:25 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u2p58j/how_lossy_are_pigtails/

Im trying to get my antenna feed through an outer wall. While I cant drill
new holes, the existing hole is just big enough to accommodate an SMA connector. I happen to have two SO-239 to SMA pigtails. If I screw the SMA
ends together and use the result to get through the wall, how much signal
am I losing compared to biting the bullet and cutting my existing RG-58 so
I can thread it through and re-crimp a connector on it?
The reason Im not simply doing that is a) Im lazy, b) I dont have any spare crimpable connectors and I want to get on the air now, dammit.
The pigtails are a few handspans long each, and the cable is RG-316. Ill be using it for HF, and no more than a hundred watts. submitted by

Question Regarding Interference with Coax Run and Identifying Source

    Posted: 13 Apr 2022 11:25 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u2wvjl/question_regarding_interference_with_coax_run_and/

I figured this might be the best place to describe a scenario Ive recently dealt with and am now immensely curious to understand. TL;DR, some source
of EM interference is occurring only during rain storms and I want to know
    what the hell it is.
For the past month and a half, my home internet connection has been
dropping out during rain storms. Several cable technicians had been
dispatched to diagnose and fix the issue. One of the technicians replaced
every stitch of wire from the pole to the house because he identified some points where water could be getting into the cable. He said that there
might be an issue with the taps water seal, tap being the point where the service drop connections to the main line on the pole, and that if I still
had issues during the next storm to contact them again so field maintenance could fix the pole issue. Thus began a serious game of hot potato where I
was constantly dealing with various departments of the cable company to get
the damned thing fix, all the while presuming it was an issue with water getting in somewhere.
Finally, a senior technician was dispatched to my house. He spent over an
hour testing the wiring at various points trying to find what he said was a source of "ingress," or some sort of interference getting through the
cables shielding. To be honest, I was pretty annoyed by this because all of
the previous techs had been pointing at the pole as the issue and, well,
rain + internet failing = water being the issue: it tracks. The tech was confident that the issue was a run of lower quality cable that had poor shielding (to the point that you can very clearly see the FM radio part of
the spectrum coming through on his meter). He replaced with new cable and
said to contact him directly if there was an issue during the next rain
storm; he even gave me his personal cell probably sensing that I was very skeptical. It is currently raining like crazy here and the modem is still locked into all of its channels. Previously, when it rained, it would lose connection on almost all of the 16 channels that provided download
bandwidth. So, now, I REALLY want to know what the hell is around my house
that starts cranking out enough interference that it makes my internet go
out! Whatever it is, its new, because the stretch of cable that was causing
it has been there for years and the issues only started within the last
    month and a half.
What is a good place to start to identify it? I have an RTL-SDR dongle that
I could hook up if anyone things that might be a good start. I do have a
the antenna mast for the fire and police station right behind my house and
a christian radio mast within a mile, both are likely suspects to me but
    who knows.
    Any ideas? submitted by /u/wrongsideofthewire

I just received a vx-6 yaesu and the software for it. I have never
programmed a HT before with a computer. It is the RT systems program that
    came on a cd-rom.
I searched this reddit and google for solutions. I plugged in the info but still not sure if I did it right for my areas local repeater due to the all
the fields on the program mentioning all sorts of things. How would I know
I did correctly and attempt to transmit to reach the repeater? Which fields would be required to program the HT and the ones to leave alone?
