    First Radio Help

    Posted: 04 Apr 2022 02:45 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/twe1bs/first_radio_help/

I just passed my Technician and General exams and am currently studying for
my extra. Once I pass the extra exam, I plan on purchasing my first radio.
I need some help as the options are a deep rabbit hole. I understand that different radios excellent in different bands and areas. If possible I
would like just an all around radio that would be good enough on all bands.
Im currently looking at the FT-991A Im in Pennsylvania, USA and my
interests are local, regional, and outside US comms. Would the FT 991A be a good first radio or am I wrong in my thinking and should just get the best radio for each band I want to use? Thanks for any guidance you can offer. submitted by /u/DahBizomb

Help me Understand My Antenna Impedance (NanoVNA)

    Posted: 04 Apr 2022 12:58 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/twbe2f/help_me_understand_my_antenna_impedance_nanovna/

I am trying to build something like this.
I have put a 3-sided, triangle shaped, full 80m horizontal loop. Currently 275ft: ~91.6ft per side. ~30-35ft high Corner fed by 50ft of LMR-240
Currently has no Balun Using NanoVNA to measure antenna as installed - so
at the end of the 50ft LMR-240 Yes, I calibrated the VNA EDIT: Antenna is
not currently grounded while testing if that matters

According to this, if I got the sides mostly equal the impedance should be somewhere around 120ohms.
My plan was to measure the actual impedence in my setup and then decide on
    a 2.5:1 or 4:1 Balun
But the impedance seems to be all over the map in the spots where it should
    be resonant.
    For example: 3.68 = Z of 9 ohms (?!?!) 7.17 = Z of 34 ohms 14.1 = Z of 37
    ohms 28.8 = Z of 79 ohms
    What am I doing wrong here?Thanks! https://preview.redd.it/qr1mhx1ggkr81.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=2692e13af2a378ec50b735caab0f6b11d8f091a8

Linear Satellites: Which ones are active for SSB QSOs?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2022 11:34 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tw9coz/linear_satellites_which_ones_are_active_for_ssb/

Its been years since I tracked linear birds. Ive been doing FM for over 10 years now, but finally have a setup to work linear sats while portable. (FM
    is just too crazy crowded)
What are the linear SSB sats I should be watching/tracking?
I got KE0PBRs Freq Cheat Sheet where he has the following satellites
    listed: CAS-4B CAS-6 XW-2A XW-2C XW-2D XW-2F XW-3/CAS-9/HO-113 AO-7 RS-44 EO-88 JO-97 FO-29 FO-99
    Any others?
Any of these not worth tracking for whatever reason? submitted by /u/grendelt

Whats your favorite band for DX?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2022 02:36 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/twdtdl/whats_your_favorite_band_for_dx/

For me personally I have had the most luck on 17 meters. For South America
I usually use 10 meters via TEP. submitted by /u/Midnight_man_

Hooking directly to the battery on mobile installation

    Posted: 04 Apr 2022 07:32 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/twkh93/hooking_directly_to_the_battery_on_mobile/

Ive always read that when installing a radio into a vehicle that you should directly connect it to the battery. Im fairly forgetful and would no doubt leave the radio on and run my battery down. Is there a way to connect
directly to the battery AND have the radio cut off when the car shuts
    off? submitted by /u/janonb

1:9 Balun Random Wire for FT8?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2022 05:06 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/twhfn3/19_balun_random_wire_for_ft8/

Good evening, I have been doing SDR a lot and really enjoying it. My
antenna is a 100ft random wire connected to a 1:9 Bauln, using the NooElec Balun One Nine v2. I get worldwide reception from FT8, it works great. I
just purchased a Xiegu G90 to add to my UHF/VHF collection of radios with
the sole purpose of FT8 and wanted to make sure Im good using that antenna setup or if I should change it up. I plan on TX at lower than the 20w rated
on the radio. Thanks for helping this HF noob not burn up his equipment!

Need information on ICOM IC-R6 frequency gaps.

    Posted: 04 Apr 2022 03:51 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/twfkv0/need_information_on_icom_icr6_frequency_gaps/

There are two official distributors selling ICOM products in India, but
neither of them dont have this ICOM IC-R6.
They are sold on Ebay, most of the sellers are from Japan, some of them
have unblocked in the product description and title, researching what this unblocked meant on the net gave me information that it referred to
frequencies used by old cell phones.
ICOM and Ebay sellers say the frequency range covered by IC-R6 is 0.1MHz to ~1.3GHz, but according to information from ICOM, it doesnt continuously
cover that frequency range, there are gaps in between.
Are there any gaps in frequency coverage of ICOM IC-R6 or can I tune any frequency between 0.1MHz to ~1.3GHz? If there are gaps, is there anyway I
can circumvent them by hardware or software mode so that I can tune any frequency between that range? submitted by /u/bypassrestrictions
