ALERT: MAJOR TO SEVERE GEOMAGNETIC STORM WARNING; 31 MARCH 2022 THROUGH 01 APRIL 2022

    Posted: 30 Mar 2022 04:34 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ts4e30/alert_major_to_severe_geomagnetic_storm_warning/

    WHEN: 31 MARCH 2022 THROUGH 01 APRIL 2022 UTC
(Expected Arrival at Approximately 03:00 UTC on 31 March)
What: A G3-level (or greater) Event likely within 48 hours, triggering
aurora (visible and radio), degrading HF (shortwave) communications.
    Details: The active sunspot region AR2975 produced a level M 1.0 x-ray
flare at 19:20 UTC on UTC date, 28 March 2022. This flare triggered a halo coronal mass ejection (CME) that is expected to overtake and combine with
an earlier CME from an M 4.0 x-ray flare which occurred at 11:29 UTC, on 28 March 2022. This combined CME is expected early on 31 March 2022 UTC (i.e.,
in the evening hours of 30 March 2022, if you are on the east coast of
North America). It is highly probable that the passage of the solar plasma cloud, riding on a fast solar wind stream, will produce MAJOR to SEVERE geomagnetic disturbances (a geomagnetic storm).
Expect QUIET to MAJOR geomagnetic activity on 31 March, with a chance of isolated severe storm periods. On 01 April, expect ACTIVE to MINOR
geomagnetic storm period. By 02 April, the geomagnetic field should become ACTIVE to QUIET. The arrival and passage of these two (combined) coronal
mass ejections are expected to impact the Earth within the next 48 hours, possibly creating visible auroras (Northern and Southern Lights) during
local night hours on 30 March through early 01 April (local). The
geomagnetic activity level could reach a polar K index of 9, and a
Planetary K index (Kp) of 6. If so, aurora could be visible in mid-latitude locations (naked-eye auroras could be visible in North America as far south
as geomagnetic latitude 55 degrees, i.e., northern areas of Idaho, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Washington, Wisconsin, and Vermont) during hours of darkness during the
periods of major to severe geomagnetic storm activity. Periods of Radio
Aurora Propagation (Au Mode) is likely, creating VHF and HF propagation via E-region ionization clouds. The Four- and Six-Meter bands will likely see aurora mode propagation from early 31 March UTC through 01 April UTC.
Comments: A G3-level geomagnetic storm is classified as a Strong event.
This level of geomagnetic activity could require voltage corrections on
power systems, and false alarms may be triggered on some protection
devices. Intermittent satellite navigation and low-frequency radio
navigation problems may occur. Shortwave (HF) radio propagation may be degraded, with the depression of the MUF (Maximum Usable Frequency) over
most circuits (the path between a transmitter and receiver, by way of the ionosphere). The HF MUF depressions can be as great as 25%. Polar paths may shut down on HF.

G3 Geomagnetic Storm Expected 31 March, 1 April, UTC Dates

Background: Active sunspot region (AR) 2975 produced at least 17 x-ray
    flares in recent days.

Importance of antenna height or antenna gain for VHF/UHF base station

    Posted: 30 Mar 2022 11:49 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tsdh0e/importance_of_antenna_height_or_antenna_gain_for/

Im setting up my first home base station for VHF/UHF, and my city has some antenna requirements on height and also subjective requirements about appearance. I also have a neighbor who likes to complain to the city about other neighbors, so Im trying very hard to make my antenna as unobtrusive
as possible. After a long search, I ordered a Jetstream JTB6 which is a 55
inch monopole with 3.0/5.5 dB gain on 2m/70cm: https://store2.rlham.com/shop/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=75064&osCsid=5tlm9nv889sartb8325cfpkd84
From the ground itll basically look like a 4.5 foot white pole, and
hopefully nobody will complain, but well see. I havent even received the
JTB6 yet, but now Im thinking I should have tried a mobile antenna instead, like the Diamond MR77: https://www.diamondantenna.net/mr77.html Its gain is only 1-2 dB less than the JTB6, and its so small and thin it would be
    invisible from the street.
Assuming either antenna would be placed at the same spot near the peak of
my houses roof, would I expect to see much difference in performance? Is
the antenna gain really important here, or is the important thing just to
get *any* antenna up high? Ive read about other people using the MR77 as a permanent base station antenna, mounted on a baking sheet. That doesnt
sound like a great permanent solution, but maybe I could rig up something similar on the roof. Or should I stick with the JTB6 and hope nobody
complains about it? This would be for basic FM repeater work, not weak
signal or other modes. submitted by /u/blinkybit

Debunking the "I jammed russian radio" threads...

Im not a radio expert, but can someone confirm my assertion that posts like this one are almost always bullshit? https://www.reddit.com/r/ukraine/comments/ts8ph0/gangnam_style_jamming_uvb76_russian_military_radio/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3
This user has a 2+ year post history of almost identical content claiming
he is "Jamming" certain radio frequencies, (this one cross-posted to 5 subreddits) but he never supplies any information or evidence to support
that claim, and never enters into any discussion on the improbability of
    his claims.
It seems that these posts are always made to non-radio focused groups, and
rely on exploiting ignorance of how Radio works to impress people for
    karma...
It would be good to get a definitive response here, then I can send people
to this post every time I see this! submitted by /u/p3ter_se

How to upgrade signal in the cheapest way?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2022 02:39 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ts2o9n/how_to_upgrade_signal_in_the_cheapest_way/

    Hello everyone!

I have never been familiar with the radio hobby, but war in my homeland
make me dive into this theme. I have deployed radio network between squads
via AnyTone 878, BF 888S/UV-5R. AnyTone is a very good station: digi
signal, encryption, powerful(but not with stock antenna), BF a quite good
too, but they only analog. Connection between AnyTone users and BF are
going on the different waves(digi and analog). This produce some troubles
in use, b/c users(OMG) cant deal with switching between two channels. Also
I have crafted few additional wire for installing antenna outside the underground rooms, where radio operator is staying. At this point I fell
that I have implement everything that I can. Neither stronger antenna or repeater we can find in our country, so the main question is - how to gain
more power in the cheapest way with components that easy to find?
    Thanks

On the hunt for the impossible HT

    Posted: 30 Mar 2022 04:22 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ts472j/on_the_hunt_for_the_impossible_ht/

Hi guys. Im looking for a pair of radios for a very specific use case. Lets
see if we can find a couple of radios that fit.
The use case is backcountry backpacking with an inflatable boat known as a packraft. Looking for two radios.
    A primary radio that:
Is waterproof enough to take a dunk in a lake. IPX7 at a minimum, IP68 preferred.
Offers VHF analog frequencies at a minimum. Wilderness monitoring, SAR, etc. Offers AM/FM public radio bands RX.
Direct radio 12v DC charging at a minimum, USB-C charging (battery or
    radio) preferred.
So far, Ive found that the Yaesu FT-5DR, VX-6R, and VX-7R are the only HTs
that check these boxes. Did I miss something? The FT-5DR is pricey, while
the other two are old and hard to obtain in Canada. I tried my luck with
the JAIPAI 8800 Plus, but Ive already managed to break it from water use.
Also looking for a companion radio for a licensed friend. Same requirements minus the AM/FM. Ive come across a radio that might do it, but theres
basically no information on it anywhere. Do you guys see any issue with it?
Are there other options? submitted by /u/UncleFred-

Base Station CB Antenna - HOA Issues

    Posted: 30 Mar 2022 05:29 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ts5c7h/base_station_cb_antenna_hoa_issues/

HOA is EXTREMELY uptight here, but a lot of neighbors have those flag poles that mount off of an exterior wall at an angle. Do you guys think it would
be viable to stick an antenna inside of a flagpole of the same style?
What would be some good material options that wouldnt interfere with the
signal but will still stay rigid? Also what kind of signal losses can I
expect with the antenna being under the roofline and at an angle? Ive seen several posts addressing the antenna/flagpole thing, but most of them are
old and may be based on out of date information. They also usually are
based on flagpoles that are completely vertical and out in the yard.
A few more options Im curious about: utilizing the aluminum gutters,
putting the antenna in the attic, utilizing roof vents, giving up and just using the CB in the car.
Any insight/references are greatly appreciated. submitted by /u/cedric_c
