    Antenna identification

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 04:00 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tp6vlp/antenna_identification/

New Technician here. Found an antenna at the local thrift store which has
no brand or model number on it. Wondering if it’s suitable for Ham use. It’s entirely aluminum and each section is adjustable. Has a SO-239 connector. Overall height is 263” with (4) horizontal radials measuring 100” each that are 90 degrees from each other. Has (4) small radials with eyelets which a screw and nut could pass through for attachment and are 10” each which go on an unknown spot.

Help me figure out how to safely ground my antenna?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 09:26 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/towe60/help_me_figure_out_how_to_safely_ground_my_antenna/

    Bad MSPAINT incoming:
I want the antenna in the backyard attached to my chimney (which I never
    use for fires)
Problem is, the grounding point for my house is on the other side of the
    house.
my station equipment is run from the 2nd floor, off of a battery powered inverter. (no A/C connection)

Whats the best method for me to safely ground this? I know that the grounds have to/should be connected to the service entrance ground, but that ground
is kind of far (see 2nd picture)
Whats the best way to bond this safely and properly?
Im getting close to just calling an electrician, but im wondering how easily/safely this can be handled?
Rear of house. Antenna is attached to chimney, and the cable will pop out
    near the roof. https://preview.redd.it/7z93t8628rp81.png?width=2880&format=png&auto=webp&s=8fd8d16b77ef6fe6841a4e6135bf93e908810a64

Connecting a mobile VHF rig to power

Got an V/U mobile rig coming in this weekend, not sure what the best way to hook it to the cars power.
I’ve seen people run powerpoles with in-line fuses straight from the
battery to the radio, is this a good option? Are there better options? submitted by /u/Mystic575

Just passed my tech and am considering the TYT TH-350 tri band as a first radio...

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 09:33 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/towwpe/just_passed_my_tech_and_am_considering_the_tyt/

Didnt see too many mentions of this radio on searching, so thought Id ask
if anyone has one. If so, what do you like and dislike? 220 seems to have repeaters in my area. Considered the Yaesu VX-6R which is also tri band but 3-4x the price of the TYT. Also looked at the trusty FT-60R but no 220 on
that one. Anyway, would love to hear your thoughts! submitted by /u/muppetspuppet

looking for advice on how to get started with amateur radio.

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 10:24 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/toydly/looking_for_advice_on_how_to_get_started_with/

    Hey guys,
So I recently started get interested into exploring more about radios, exploring (listen) whats out there
So Im looking for a radio that has many options to explore.
I found that SDR (software) radios are best because of the price lol.
My budget is around 100 euros.
What is a good amateur radio to start with?
There are many options at https://aliexpress.com (China) but I dont know
    which one to pick.
    So far my options are:
    € 45,66 | RTL-SDR Blog RTL SDR V3 R820T2 RTL2832U 1PPM TCXO SMA RTLSDR Software Defined Radio with Multipurpose Dipole Antenna https://a.aliexpress.com/_mPHcPka
    € 30,34 5%OFF | RTL2832U+R820T2 100KHz-1.7GHz UHF VHF HF RTL.SDR USB Tuner Receiver AM FM Radio https://a.aliexpress.com/_mLtCzl8
€ 68,40 | 10KHz-2GHz Wideband 14bit Software Defined Radios SDR Receiver compatible with SDRplay driver & software with TCXO 0.5PPM https://a.aliexpress.com/_mr6gD3u
€ 30,36 | Ham Radio Receiver 100KHz-1.7GHz full Band UV HF RTL-SDR USB
Tuner RTLSDR USB dongle with RTL2832u R820t2 RTL SDR Receiver https://a.aliexpress.com/_mt4SgKK

2m / 70cm dual band antenna for house roof

    Posted: 25 Mar 2022 09:43 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/toh33y/2m_70cm_dual_band_antenna_for_house_roof/

If Im interested in a 2m / 70cm antenna for my homes roof, wouldnt a
vertical dipole be among the most obvious choices? For a half wave antenna
at 2m, it should be about 1m or just over 3ft. But the options I see for
sale are mostly all longer than this, such as this 5.6 ft Diamond antenna -
why so long? They also seem to have radials at the bottom, which I thought werent needed for a dipole. So Im confused. https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/dmn-x50a
I dont think I need a directional antenna, just something I can put on my
roof that will be larger and higher up than my HT antenna. Suggestions? submitted by /u/blinkybit

RIGBlaster Pinout UV-5R and/or DM-1701? Trying to setup Original RIGBlaster
to work with my handhelds. Using an RJ-45 cable and mapping the pinout. The problem I see is that the Mic (-) is shared by the PTT on the tip of the
Aux cable into the Baofeng... In the RIGBlaster the terminals are seperate.

    Interference when monitoring?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 07:56 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tos7s9/interference_when_monitoring/

Im having a little bit of an odd problem with an older commercial radio (Kenwood TK-2312). Ive tried googling it, but either its an obscure issue,
or Im not using the right terms, so Im posting here to see if anyone knows
what Im talking about and can point me in the right direction.
The radio seems to be fully functional, but seems to have an interference problem at 153.400, and it seems like the radio itself is generating the interference, as two other commercial handhelds (another 2312 and a TK-260) will pick up the interference at 153.400 only when the first one is tuned
to that particular frequency, but my Yaesu FT-65 doesnt pick it up even
    with open squelch.
Could this issue possibly be solved by reprogramming the radio? (Cable
hasnt arrived yet so I cant test) Or is it indicative of a hardware problem that could eventually affect other channels?

TLDR: Radio seems to generate interference when monitoring one channel.
When its tuned to other channels, no interference. Other radios only pick
up interference when first one is tuned to that frequency. submitted by /u/NEOntario

About a year and a half ago....

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 12:31 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tojehi/about_a_year_and_a_half_ago/

So here we go about a year and a half ago my granddad passed away, and long story short I inherited a few large boxes of radio stuff mostly mobile
C.B.s scanners, amps. I just couldnt see it all getting thrown away. Anyway when he was alive he was a member of local fire dept for around 30 years
and his hand held for going out on calls was amongst the items in the
boxes. Now to the question, the charger was with it also so I charged it up
and it powered up and worked great , never transmitted with it but I
thought it was cool cause it would pick up emergency services, law
enforcement, fire dept, ect.. way better than any scanner Ive ever owned!
But here about a week ago, flipped the switch on and nothing no power up. Tested the battery pack all is well there and thats all the further Ive
dove into it on account I know next to nothing about radios. So Im just
looking for any helpful advice. The radio is a vertex standard VX-900v
    Thanks much. submitted by /u/Honest_Action_4602
