so here it goes. I have found myself at the bottom of a google hole... a suggested news article today was about amateur radio and of course there
were links to cheap amateur radios including the little beufeng ones that
look as though theyre likely illegal...
I dont really know too much about it although I do know broadcasting on a channel or frequency that you are not licensed to use is definitely illegal
and no I do not wish to do that.
I would however like to know what a good inexpensive shortwave radio would
be to have in the northeastern United States for someone who does things
like hunting hiking and random frequency surfing for boredom listening pleasure. are the cheap Chinese Amazon ones the way to go or is there
something else that would be recommended.

Ordered my first mobile radio. Questions about external speaker

Ive ordered a FTM200. I mostly spend time on 52/446 calling frequencies and wanted APRS (for off-roading/ road tripping). I have a 4runner and plan to mount the main control unit under the passenger seat. Should I get a
speaker? The DTMF microphone is just a microphone, so its not like a HT
speaker mic. submitted by /u/VTEC_8K

Is it the radio or me (a newbie question)
Posted: 25 Mar 2022 05:34 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/to9mk7/is_it_the_radio_or_me_a_newbie_question/
TLDR: I cant tell if the problem is this new radio or me when I get nothing
but static on my local weather band (162.5500). And yes, I tried scanning.
I just got hold of a wouxun KG UV9D Plus from Facebook marketplace. Thought
I got my license quite some years ago, Ive never actually had a radio to
use. So this is my first. Anyway, I thought Id see if I could listen to the weather to start with and cant seem to do that. I did a reset on the radio
-- just to clear out any old stuff the person before me had on here
(supposedly its new in box, but Im suspicious of that). Anyway, I entered
the local weather NOAA 162.5500 and hear nothing at all. I have tried everything I could think of: switching the two antennas its come with from
dual band to full band, switching from wide band to narrow band on the
menu, increasing squelch, turning off squelch, turning on squelch, volume increase and decrease... I dont know what to do. Is it the radio or is it
me?
I really dont know if theres something else I need to do that Im missing
here.
How can I tell? I dont know any ham operators around or even where there is
a ham shop around. :( submitted by /u/theboldfox2

[OC] Planning for an emergency...
Posted: 25 Mar 2022 06:00 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/toa3g2/oc_planning_for_an_emergency/
Identifying the problem is the first step in fixing it and with that I want
to talk about emergencies. One of the very first things I was told about
our amateur radio community was that were here for when emergencies happen.
Our purpose is to communicate, so in a crisis, we can assist by supplying communication to the situation.
Ive talked about some of this before. Preparedness in the way of on-air training by contesting, in getting gear ready and even exercises for when
this occurs. There are amateur clubs dedicated to putting up repeaters for
just such an eventuality.
Recently there was a local news item about radio amateurs banding together, sending gear to fellow amateurs who were hit by severe flooding that wiped
out their shack and with it their ability to communicate.
Another event was a friend who lost a big chunk of his shack when his
basement flooded.
Across Australia and in other parts of the world in recent times weve been witness to the most devastating fires that destroyed entire towns and communities, taking with it infrastructure, communications, not to mention stock, local flora and fauna and entire wildlife ecosystems, bringing some
to extinction levels.
The destruction doesnt end there. War and famine, drought, cyclones,
hurricanes or typhoons, snow storms, heatwaves and the like.
All those situations can to greater or lesser degree benefit from amateur
radio communications, either for amateurs affected, or for the community at large.
I started considering what would actually be required to be useful in such
a situation. Could you be prepared for anything, or are you required to
pick and choose? What does "being prepared" actually look like and what
steps can you take once its happening?
I asked myself if sending radio gear to amateurs who are affected by floods
is the most effective way to actually help, or would it be better to pass
the hat around and send the proceeds to their bank account?
Should you as an amateur drive into an emergency area and start
communicating, or are there better ways to help?
There are local amateur radio emergency service groups under various names
in different countries, some of which are highly effective, others much
less so.
One attempt I made was to join the local volunteer state emergency
services. For several reasons that didnt work out for me, but it remains a viable option for some.
Joining those types of groups gives you a framework, but does it actually answer the underlying question, that of effectiveness?
I have a drawer full of emergency service training manuals, each more dense than the next, but very little of it relates to the amateur radio. Many
pages are dedicated to search and rescue, staying alert, first aid, keeping alive, hand signals, log books, mapping and the like.
I am left wondering why we as a community, with a proud century of
activity, having one of the main principles as emergency communication
appear to have such a poor track record of actually considering what
dealing with an emergency looks like and what your own individual place
could be in that situation.
We document our radios, antennas, power supplies, contacts, circuit board designs, contesting procedures and all the rest of it, but we dont seem to
do the same for emergencies.
Why is that?
In my opinion, its time to document emergency amateur radio and if you have already started, get in touch.

Power supply question about loads across multiple devices.
Posted: 25 Mar 2022 09:38 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tnq512/power_supply_question_about_loads_across_multiple/
When selecting a power supply, the amps across devices are cumulative,
while volts are not, right? Lets say you have a power supply feeding into a rigrunner that is in turn feeding multiple devices... Say a radio with 13.8v/10A requirement and another one with a 13.8v/21A requirements and an
auto tuner with a 13.8V/0.5A requirement.
This adds up to a total of 31.5 amps and means I would need to look for a
power supply that can deliver 13.8V and at least 32 amps? Or am I missing something? submitted by /u/NedTaggart

I recently purchased an Alinco DR-735T and I am waiting for it to arrive.
Ill be putting it in my Toyota Tacoma and would like to remote mount the control head. Instead of purchasing the the separation kit, has anyone used CAT-5 or 6 to make their own separation cable?
I was really torn between this radio and the ICOM 2730a, but saw many
reviews that the viewing angles on that were horrible and the ICOM didnt
come with mounting hardware, so I went with the Alinco. submitted by /u/Rakuun535

Ive been half-heartedly practicing morse code for a couple years, mostly on LCWO or by playing audio files and then keying what I hear back into a
dummy load and comparing the text. With multi-month gaps in practice, I
dont make much progress. I dont recall when I came across the Morserino,
but I ordered one on a whim a couple weeks ago (Austria to Wa, USA in 11
days, I was impressed!) and assembled it today. The creator, OE1WKL, says
it takes about an hour which I would guess would be about right for someone
new to soldering. For my skill level of Frequently voids warranties, but everything works it took about 40 minutes including a few brief
interruptions.
The capacitive touch paddles included work fine, but Im used to the
feedback (?) of my BY-1 so Ive been using it with that plugged in and
playing around with the echo trainer so far. I havent really dug into the
other features yet.
Might be worth a look for anyone looking to learn or get re-acquainted with morse code.

Motorola SLR-8000 and Brandmeister network
Posted: 25 Mar 2022 10:04 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tnr5rq/motorola_slr8000_and_brandmeister_network/
Our OEM group has a Motorola SLR-8000. We currently have it operating in auto-select mode between analog and digital (DMR). It works great.
We been told that you cannot connect this repeater to the Brandmeister
network and retain that functionality as it locks you into digital only
when you put it on the network. (Im paraphrasing here - basically,
auto-select somehow doesnt work when its on the network is the gist of it). Does anyone know if that is true? I cant find any detailed Motorola documentation on the subject, and would like to confirm before we start
messing with the repeater.

Pactor Winlink, the MFJ 939K tuner will start to tune. Windows will then
close port (7) where Pactor is plugged into, and Ill get error message indicating unable to open port 7. Have to unplug/replug pactor usb and dev
mgr will then recognize port 7. It seems only to occur when tuner attempts
to tune upon tx, but not everytime. Any ideas on why windows closes port? submitted by /u/maxrun2014

I’m looking for a decent, can be put in an attic, VHF antenna to listen in
on some vhf frequencies - no transmitting. Just wondering if anyone has
some good recommendations for antennas that aren’t hugely expensive, and
can be left on 24/7 (so none with batteries)
Using a RSP1A & rtl2sdr v3 Location doesn’t have too much Interference -
and I am within 15km of the closest transmitter
