Did I break some kind of unspoken rule.

    Posted: 07 Mar 2022 05:16 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t94uqo/did_i_break_some_kind_of_unspoken_rule/

So on Saturday I picked up a brand new FTDX10. We decided to make a mini vacation and just drive up and get it. So we get back Sunday afternoon and
I set it up and make a few hf DX contacts. When 20m started to die I
switched to the real reason I got a new hf rig. -almost plug and play
digital mode.- HRD fired up >BPSK31 >and I make a 12 solid contacts before
I needed to hit the sack for work tomorrow. I used a lot of macros and took
a long time to respond as I started to get in the flow. And Im fairly sure
most other people were doing the same minus the slow response time. Then
today I got off work fire the rig back up and it comes on to a BPSK31
station calling cq. Return the call and I notice there are long pauses
between the letters like he is typing as he goes. Cool XX5XXX DE XX3X BTU.
So I hit him with the station info HRD preset macro and I get this
return. "...wow thankS for the long macro (very long empty string) bye."
So the question is was this just one guy having a bad day or did I break a unspoken rule about not using a macro when the other station is not?
edit. I should have been clearer when I said long empty string I meant on
    his end.
Edit the edit I received the long empty sting from him not the other way
around it was about 20sec. submitted by /u/mindwarp903

    Setup for Testing Radios

    Posted: 07 Mar 2022 08:54 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t98zk8/setup_for_testing_radios/

So I had posted a picture of the wonderful diode programming board of the IC-22S on the weekend. Ive fired up the radio to tinker with to see if it
still has life. One of the channels is supposed to be 146.520, so I grabbed
one of my other radios, I checked if the frequency is clear, IDd, and then
gave it a quick test. No joy.... I didnt have an antenna on the back, but I figured the close proximity should be good enough to kick it into receive
with a low squelch setting. Tried a wire in the back as well, still no joy.
On a side note, did you know that SO-239 connectors nicely fit a banana plug???!!!
Since I want to do some debugging/diagnosing here whats my best bet? I dont want to tie up actual RF bands testing equipment. Since everything is in
close proximity would getting a dummy load and transmitting into it
suffice? Or should I be looking at getting an attenuator (with appropriate power rating) and connect the radios up directly?
What do other folks do for bench testing when theyre repairing radios? I
really dont want to buy a function generator... I just got a new 20MHz one
and cant afford to break the bank on an RF function generator to go up to 146MHz and higher. submitted by /u/aacmckay

    Xeigu G90 Issues

    Posted: 07 Mar 2022 05:38 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t959x4/xeigu_g90_issues/

Hey everyone, I recently purchased a Xeigu G90 to operate on HF from my
car. I have a Yaesu FT991A in my shack and currently have them both setup
side by side connected to the same single point ground and bonding system
and using the same antenna, a 40-10m EFHW kit from HF kits. The problem I
am having is that the front end selectivity of the G90 is TERRIBLE at 30%
gain I have a noise floor of S9 + 60db. It is just totally overloaded FM
and AM broadcast radio all over the ham bands too. I found a QSO that was ongoing on 20m 14.205 with the Yaesu and was able to hear both sides very
well with minimal noise. When I tuned to the same frequency with the G90 it
was overtaken by an FM station 92.9 specifically plus the S meter was
pegged. Does this radio not have an FM stop band filter and the Yaesu does? What is going on here? Would it be worth trying an off the shelf stop band?
or should I just return it and go with the FT891 or similar? I submitted a support ticket to the dealer already. Ive only been a ham for about a year
now, so I am still trying to learn so much, a little elmering might go a
    long way on this one.

Is it okay to learn Morse code at a low effective WPM?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2022 01:10 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t8zl6n/is_it_okay_to_learn_morse_code_at_a_low_effective/

Of course Im keeping the character speed high, so I learn them fast from
the start, and Ive memorized them well so far. I just have trouble when
many letters are sent really quickly so I lowered the effective speed to increase the pause in between letters. Is this a good strategy? (Im using lcwo.net btw) submitted by /u/MaxBattleLizard

In Canada, if I want to use DMR encryption on ham radio, how should I share
    my encryption key?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2022 03:34 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t92tun/in_canada_if_i_want_to_use_dmr_encryption_on_ham/

In Canada, one is permitted to "use a code or cipher that is not secret" on amateur radio.
    (See: https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/sor-96-484/FullText.html
under "Communications with Radio Apparatus in the Amateur Radio Service")
However, the wording of "not secret" is vague, and I couldnt find the definition of "not secret" in the definitions. If I were to use the
encryption function of my DMR radio, how should I publicize the encryption
key? Would I need to read it over the air (which would not be very
convenient, since the key is pretty long)? Or, could I just put it on my website or QRZ page, along with my call sign? submitted by

Does a window line dipole need to be weatherproofed?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2022 01:56 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t90ngt/does_a_window_line_dipole_need_to_be/

I know coax fed antennas need to be weather proofed to protect the
connectors and the cable. Is the same true for window line? Im considering putting up a center fed dipole, fed with window line into a tuner. I was
going to cut a piece of PVC pipe to use for the center insulator and use machine screws, lock washers and bolts to attach the feed line. Any issue
with doing this and does something need to be done to keep water from
getting into the feed line insulation? submitted by /u/uncle_yugo

Kenwood TK 890 duel head not powering on

    Greetings fellow radio enthusiasts,
I have a project Kenwood TK 890 that Im attempting to convert from a dash
mount to a duel remote head unit. Iv hit a road block and dont know what to
do. The unit works as intended when I revert it back to a dash mount, but
when I hook up everything for the duel heads all I get is a single click
sound from the radio when I attempt to turn it on. I have the 9 pin
accesory set to audio jumper connected on the back of the transceiver,
KRK-6DH for the remote connection, KCH-15 Control heads with KES-5
speakers. Additionally I have the KPG-44D programming software for the X90 series radios. Is there something I missed somewhere? submitted by /u/Elittle93

    Experiences with Daiwa CN-501H?

Anyone have a Daiwa CN-501H? What are your experiences with it? My main use
is with a Yaesu FT-817 with amplifier, and probably a tuner in the near
    future.
Was originally looking at a Diamond SX-200 but there dont appear to be any
in North America at all and Ive been waiting with my local radio shop since last, idk, October. DX Engineering says they might get some in around June. Other suggestions for an economical, HF band SWR meter that have

    HF on the cheap?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2022 07:04 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t8r609/hf_on_the_cheap/

Hi, Ive had my HF ticket for years, but beyond my $100 Woxun VHF/UHF HT,
Ive never been able to expand into HF. Buying a $500 radio + supporting kit
is just not in the budget. (Wife will kill me) Im linux-literate and a programmer by trade.
The SDR transceivers seem to be a potential affordable gateway to HF. Any recommendations? I have lots of computers on-hand and programming
knowledge, is there a hf in a box kit that I could plug into an old laptop
Ive got and transmit decent power on HF in some way without breaking the
    bank? submitted by /u/bfarrgaynor

Damage to Unsupported Coax Suspended from a Tree?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2022 03:18 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t92hpj/damage_to_unsupported_coax_suspended_from_a_tree/

I searched a lot and couldnt find much on this: Will suspending coax
loosely from your raised antenna damage it?
See my Ed Fong DBJ hung in a tree behind my shack
I am not talking about connector damage. I have relieved the strain on the connector.
Will the coax being unsupported and swaying in the wind damage it from stretching or repeated swaying?
This is a 50 ft run of DXEngineering RG-8U, the last ~15-20 feet or so is suspended straight up with no support. Antenna is raised over a tree limb.
I also plan to do something similar with some LMR-400 for a different
    antenna.
On one hand, everyone says to always setup strain relief connections all
    the way down your mast.
On the other hand, it seems like people suspend the feedpoint of their HF dipoles way up in trees like this all the time.
    Thanks!
