My local ham group helped me raise a push up pole and HF loop this weekend,
and I made my first dx contact today with Bonaire on 10m @ 90W (tech
license). So exciting! (The power line is further away than it looks).

Gumball rally on 2 meters ?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 05:40 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t7yyu4/gumball_rally_on_2_meters/

Is anyone aware of a contest or event where teams of amateurs make ( and document) an unbroken chain of contacts spanning the contiguous United
States? Would it even be possible given some of the distances that would
have to be covered west of the dry-line?
The "gumball rally" reference in the title is from a 1976 movie where auto enthusiasts participate in a wild car race across the country. submitted

    Computer CW keying

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 06:10 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t7zjaa/computer_cw_keying/

I recently got my PC to be able to key my rig. Im learning CW but Im very
very inefficient. Id like to use the computer to key and decode, but Im
curious what percentage of amateurs do that? Im assuming theres some stigma attached to it? Opinions? submitted by /u/DayGuyWhoDuzStuf

Ham beginner, no line of sight to almost anywhere, options?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 08:14 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t821wh/ham_beginner_no_line_of_sight_to_almost_anywhere/

Im thinking about getting involved in amateur radio, since it looks like
fun. I live in a hilly area on the peninsula south of San Francisco, and
there are hills higher than me in virtually every direction within about
half a mile at most. Does this mean Im not going to have a good experience unless I move somewhere else?
My location is not a valley exactly, but its on the side of a large hill
and with other hills crowding in all around. If I were maybe 40-50 ft
higher, Id at least have decent visibility to the east, but I dont think I
can put a 50 ft tower in my yard. I used HeyWhatsThat to map visibility,
and it confirmed my local visibility is basically a tiny circle.
I do have visibility to a small section of mountain crest about 6-7 miles south. If you know the area, its the stretch along Skyline Drive (Hwy 35)
in the Santa Cruz mountains, from Kings Mountain Road north to the Purisima Creek Open Space parking lot. But thats mostly redwood forest, and I dont
think there are any repeaters there. Maybe theres something at Kings
    Mountain.
From what little I know, beginners usually get started with VHF and UHF
bands, which require line of sight, so I might be doomed. Do I still have a chance of bouncing signal off a hill or something like that? Should I skip
VHF and UHF, and concentrate on the longer wavelength bands where I think
the hills wouldnt be a major problem? Thanks for any suggestions or
resources you can recommend. submitted by /u/blinkybit

    QSO's with Russian Stations

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 07:14 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t80s30/qsos_with_russian_stations/

Given the current situation in Ukraine and the boycott of many Russian
Companys and services, how are the wider Amateur Radio community acting?
Over the years, I have never let politics or religion interfere with which
CQ calls I answer or which part of the world I work but somehow, things
seem different this time.. Without getting political, what are your
    thoughts? submitted by /u/JohnNeedsTherapy

    Suggestions for basement shack

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 11:22 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t8665f/suggestions_for_basement_shack/

So I’m in the process of finishing my basement and I’ve got my room picked out for my ham radio stuff. Anyone have any suggestions on things that
would be good to think about installing for potential future use prior to putting up drywall? I was thinking of installing a 220v receptacle in case
I have an amplifier that needs that at some point in the future as well as
easy access to the coax and ground connections coming through the wall. Anything else that I’m missing? I’m currently using an Icom 7300 and 705. submitted by /u/Lumberjack_61

Worth doing anything with this? Currently residing in my loft not being
used. Pretty sure it's just an FM antenna. I think it's made locally to me
but I can't find much info on it. Figured it could be broken down for 2m /
    70cm maybe?

    how to stop repeater beeping

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 06:05 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t7zfkt/how_to_stop_repeater_beeping/

    Hi,
Im tuned into my local repeater. It does its CW beep every 15 minutes,
which is a bit annoying when monitoring it.
Is there any way for me to monitor the repeater for voice, but stop the beeping? submitted by /u/Hoban_Riverpath
