    Just passed the Tech test

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 08:32 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t7d5gf/just_passed_the_tech_test/

So this has been an interesting week. We started off last weekend talking
about getting our children GMRS radios. Cue my tendency to over research,
lol. This got me into a rabbit hole of looking into HAM again. Found a
UV-5R for $25 online and figured why not. Received it a day or two later, learned how to program local stations like EMS and such, and realized how
much of a PITA it is to save more than a couple of channels at a time. So I ordered the cable and learned how to use CHIRP.
Thursday I figured that if I had a radio capable of using HAM bands why not look into the Tech license. So I found some free study info and practice
tests online. On Friday I found out I could register to do the exam
completely online the next day for $15. Figured why not, Im fairly
comfortable with most of the content and the worst outcome is Id be out $15
    and some time.
Took the test about an hour or two ago and passed with a 92%.
Now Im waiting for the test to be sent to the FCC and awaiting my callsign. Definitely did not think a week ago that I would have a HAM license by the
end of the week (sorta) just because we decided to look into radios for the kids.
PS yes I am aware of the legalities of HAM vs GMRS licensing and using a
UV-5R on GMRS or FRS. submitted by /u/Red_Dreamer_

    Advice on donating gear

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 07:22 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t7pvmc/advice_on_donating_gear/

Hi all, I’m doing a bit of a downsize and I have some lightly used ham gear I’m thinking of donating. A yaesu ft-450d, a yaesu ft-8800, a couple of
power supplies, a yt-450 autotuner a bench speaker, j-pole, antenna and
    cables etc.
I’d rather donate as I don’t want to go through the hassle of selling. Ideally I’d love it to go to an org working with disadvantaged kids. My
local club is far from diverse (cough) and I’m not thrilled with the Boy Scouts.
I’m in the Portland area, but might ship for the right cause.
    Any thoughts? submitted by /u/DataVeg

Examples of ohms law in action please?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 03:01 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t7l5h3/examples_of_ohms_law_in_action_please/

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question but I think if I seen the
formulas put to everyday use in ham-electronics project examples that will
help me out a lot! Again sorry if I am coming off as increadibly stupid
here but if someone could give examples of when I would want to use the VCR formulas (I) amps-current that would be great. Like wouldnt the multimeter
in many cases do away with having to perform many of these manualy anyway?
In any case I already have ordered a talking calculator to help me out with
a lot of this stuff. Speaking of calculator I am legally blind and might
need someone to help me get the figures from the practice test accessible.
For some reason when I download them to make them big in windows photo
viewer it only shows as a black screen. submitted by /u/yamarobotron-DX7

Best spray contact cleaner for potentiometers please?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 08:56 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t7rfdg/best_spray_contact_cleaner_for_potentiometers/

Searching online I found myself on a few audio/music forums and reddit
threads and it sounds like their recommendation is a spray called “Deoxit” it seems there may be a few different versions of this and price ranges a
    bit.
Primarily I’m trying to clean out the pots of a vintage mobile CB for my wife. I’m ready to tear it down and replace all of the front panel pots
with new ones if need be but thought I would try this first. I know this is
the amateur radio sub, but many of us got started in CB or still have/use
them now and I’m no exception. So if it makes you more comfortable, pretend I’m talking about an old ham radio 😁
The on/volume pot is the worst and I find that I have to wiggle it around a
bit before I even get audio so it’s probably a goner but I’d like to give it a try first.
What do you recommend for this task? Please specify if there is a specific formula most ideal to this application.
    Thank you. submitted by /u/Steve_but_different

    Power supply for first shack

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 02:13 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t7k71a/power_supply_for_first_shack/

I’m looking for power supply recommendations for my first ham shack.
Setting up in my basement. Base station will likely be Yaesu FT991a (shack
in a box) or Icom 7300. Criteria: minimal RF noise, enuf growing room to
supply some accessories I might want later. No particular budget but
research suggests $150-200 range would get nice switching power supply. Linears, maybe $50-100 higher. Just have no clue where to start, which to choose or why: switching vs linear, digital vs analog, good vs poor quality brands. What abt a distribution box off the power supply? Hoping for few opinions, probably get 100. Thnx is advance. submitted by /u/Ezekiel39

I'm looking for a guide for properly grounding my station that doesn't
assume anything beyond that I can operate a mallet and shovel.

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 05:13 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t796xq/im_looking_for_a_guide_for_properly_grounding_my/

the NEC assumes a level of expertise that I dont have. The ARRL handbook is similarly hard for me to interpret. I need to finish this project while the line paint marking the utilities is still legible, so its getting done one
way or the other, but Id like to do it to code.
So far, I have a 50 foot silicone insulated wire acting as a random wire antenna. The far end is connected to an insulator which is in turn tied to
my back fence with some nylon rope. The feed point is a 9:1 unun hooked to
a flagpole up 25 feet. To the ground terminal of the unun is attached a
length of spare house electrical cord with fork terminals terminating each
end. The other end of this ground wire is attached to an 8 ft ground rod at
the base of the antenna with an acorn clamp.
Heres how Id like to finish this up: drive a second ground rod about 15 ft
away from the base of the antenna, as close to my shack as I can without puncturing the gas line. Connect the two ground rods with 6 gauge solid
bare copper wire, and connect the bonding bus of my shack to that second
ground rod. Then I want to bond the second ground rod near my shack to the house ground, which is about 30 feet away and around a corner. I have to
avoid electrical conduit for a hot tub as well as the internet cable and
house power feed to the house along the way to the house ground rod.
Is this a safe installation? Do I have to worry about sharp bends in the bonding wire between the ground rods? How deep do I need to bury the
bonding wire? Is the bonding wire buried directly or do I need conduit? submitted by /u/Altie-McAltface

CW words per minute to bits per second

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 01:04 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/t7iu62/cw_words_per_minute_to_bits_per_second/

Heres a question thats been on my mind: how can you quantify the speed difference between CW and digital modes? My research has lead me to this article:
    https://www.w8ji.com/cw_bandwidth_described.htm
which says that 1 baud is equal to one change in the signal per second, and since CW only has two states (carrier present and carrier absent) the baud
rate is identical to the bit rate. However, this article is concerned with maximum bandwidth, not bit rate, so it just takes the highest number of
signal changes per second, which is just a string of alternating dits and
dit spaces. It arrives at a conversion of 5/6 to convert WPM to bps. I dont think this is quite accurate if were trying to get the bit rate of, say, a
CW QSO at 20 WPM, since a string of dits like youd get by pressing one side
of a paddle isnt a good representation of normal communication.
Taking this further, given the standard CW ratios of 1 dit, 3 dits to one
dah, 1 dit for intra-character spaces, 3 dits for intra-word spaces, and 7
dits for inter-word spaces, we can get the slowest symbol rate by sending a series of Ts separated by word spaces. Since WPM uses a standard word that
is 50 dits long ("PARIS" followed by a word space) we can fit 10 pairs of
Ts and word spaces in the same 50 dit length word, which arrives at a ratio
of 1/10 to convert this slowest possible rate from WPM to bps. Naively, I
would assume that we could get a more accurate measure of bits per second
by assuming the average between these two extremes, so by averaging the
fast rate of 5/6 with the slow rate of 1/10 I arrive at a conversion factor
of 7/15 to convert WPM to bits per second.
So that would mean 20 WPM would work out to about 9.3 bits per second, with
the maximum speed I normally hear on air being about double that at about
40 WPM or 18.6 bits per second.
Your thoughts? Im not an expert in this sort of thing, so Im probably off
    the mark. submitted by /u/Altie-McAltface
