    Getting an hf station setup

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 02:01 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/se9yg2/getting_an_hf_station_setup/

Im planning on getting a Yaesu 891 and trying to figure out an antenna, Ive been thinking about a dipole, but Im not sure I have enough room on my
property to run one horizontally. Im thinking I could do an inverted V. I
found this MFJ Dipole that seems like it would work. I know Id need a tuner which Im fine with getting, I cant transmit on anything but 10M since I
dont have my general ticket yet. Does anyone see an issue going this
    route? submitted by /u/zzyzxrd

a peak in the Northeast or spot from far away to see if you can reach feel free! Our goal summit times are between 1100-1200. Lmk if you plan on summiting! submitted by /u/DO_initinthewoods

    Utterly confused

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 08:51 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/se2soa/utterly_confused/

    Hey all,
So learning general radio coms and ham radio has always been on my “to learn” list.
I’m finally making the plunge to do it. I’ve purchased a Yaseau FT-60R and I do plan on at least getting my technicians license.
With that said, before I even begin to think about getting my license, I
want to learn about radio communications at a very high general level. I
see so many different acronyms, words, and concepts that I can’t begin to understand. I’ve searched for learning resources on this sub but most recommendations seemed geared towards taking an exam or a specific learning track. I’m in the phase of not knowing what I don’t know and not knowing how to learn.
I’m wondering if someone can recommend a resource that is more along the lines of “here’s how radios work, how they are used, and all the different types”.
    Thanks! submitted by /u/septic_sergeant

    block single frequency ..

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 01:13 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/se8uqh/block_single_frequency/

What kind of filter would be used to block a single frequency from many, so
not a bandfilter but a filter for one single frequency, example say 28.350 there is a interference. no sdr is being used so software notches are out
of the question.. its a old radio.. is this even possible to block a single frequency? ps i am a newbie and learning , but can this be possible?
    thanks.. submitted by /u/j021dl

Anyone ever use the M2 SATPACK eggbeater antennas for satellites?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 12:21 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/se7nok/anyone_ever_use_the_m2_satpack_eggbeater_antennas/

I just put a Wouxun KGUV920P-A VHF/UHF radio in my shack to monitor
repeaters. Its a very basic dual receive radio. I was thinking maybe I
could turn it into a cheap satellite operation with the M2 SATPACK antenna. They have pretty good reviews and although are omnidirectional, seem to
garner positive feedback for the easier FM satellites. Anyone here tried
these out for sats, and would this overall setup be adewuate for basic satellite communications?

If I can ask some thing here. What kind of antenna is this? I know is low resolution photo but it's on top of the building and is to far away to take quality picture. Thanks.

Came across this transmit/receive switch from Pacific Antenna (qrpkits.com)
and have couple of questions about the schematic

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 04:55 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sdxqu9/came_across_this_transmitreceive_switch_from/

Manual for v3 can be found here (link to pdf): http://www.qrpkits.com/files/EasyTRSW3_20171212.pdf
Schematic is on the last page.
I saw the schematic for V2 and the difference is the added components of
    C2, R5 and D3 in V3.
What do those components do in this circuit as opposed to not having them
in there? Why tantalum for C2?
I have very superficial knowledge of circuits. I can follow them enough to
make stuff but understanding what everything does? Ways away from that. submitted by /u/Santafio

    Magnetic phone mount for HT?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 07:11 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/se0lq8/magnetic_phone_mount_for_ht/

Im going on a road trip soon and want to use my HT (an old baofeng uv5r).
Would using a magnetic phone mount noticeably affect the reception or transmission? Could the metal disc create a sort of dipole effect with the actual antenna? submitted by /u/catslikeboxes

    Learning Course and Kit recommendations

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 07:30 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sdonra/learning_course_and_kit_recommendations/

I posted a question a couple days ago asking for recommendations for a
basic electronics course. I don’t have a strong math/science background so
I don’t find lot of the technical stuff very intuitive. I have a General Class, but I’m hoping to better understand the technical side of the hobby. Someday I’ll probably pursue the Extra, but I want to have a solid
    foundation before I consider that.
One of the suggestions that really interested me was to get a learning kit, like Arduino. It was mentioned that Arduino includes a fair amount of
learning coding, which I’m not really interested in.
Has anyone got a recommendation for a learning kit? So far, reading through
the ARRL handbook hasn’t been very fruitful.
Anyone had experience with the Charles Platt books and kits? submitted

    HELP IDing Signal

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 06:53 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sdnwt6/help_iding_signal/

TL;DR: What is this signal that I heard in the HF band?

Because of my lack of a license, I am limited to scanning and listening.
While listening early one Tuesday night, my Uniden SR30C picked up this
strong signal/broadcast in the HF band originating from 162.250.
I missed the first part of the transmission because I was fumbling with my phone trying to hit the record button. I heard several similar
transmissions after the original at unpredictable intervals and at
    different broadcast lengths.
I woke up the next morning and turned on my scanner to listen to NOAA, but CloseCall immediately switched me back over to 165.250. That time, I got a
MUCH longer transmission. I even had to cut the recording short because I
    had to leave for class.
Thanks to @ chrischansmom on TikTok (please drop him a visit; he does lots
of cool projects), we were able to figure out the following: Start Freq:
225 Hz End Freq: 2600 Hz Bandwidth: 2375 Hz (or 2.375 KHz) Location
received: Fayetteville, AR Maybe: MT-63 Digital mode ? Maybe: Encrypted
gov/mil comms (Naval ships using AIS)
Any help would be appreciated! submitted by /u/fuuny_doe
