Thoughts on Kenwood TS-2000 for new General?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 06:50 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rwc45b/thoughts_on_kenwood_ts2000_for_new_general/

Ive been offered a Kenwood TS-2000 for what looks like a really good price
from someone in our club, but of course, these are older and this model has
a long life of service. Are they easy to maintain? Anything to be worried
    about with the unit?
I havent seen it and he said he boxed it up when he got his new equipment
and has a lot of accessories. I have no reason not to trust him, but I am wondering if this is a good starter to get inti HF. The price looks good
and I think he is trying to help a new guy out.
I know I need a power supply and a good antenna (s), but I dont have an
HOA, so I can be a little flexible with not having to hide the antenna.
    Any thoughts? submitted by /u/joe-data

your contacts have been. Can you find people across multiple
states/provinces or is this only what HF is meant to do? submitted by /u/Golossos

Need some help on grounding/setting up my new station.

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 08:09 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rwdpmq/need_some_help_on_groundingsetting_up_my_new/

https://imgur.com/a/REAs2vw (map of my house for reference)
Hi friends, I come to for advice and Ill try to make this short. I just purchased a used Yaesu 991a and Im having trouble figuring out grounding it
    and setting it up safely.
From everything Ive read, the station ground needs to be linked with the
house ground, additionally the wire cant be too long because it with
increase resonance and noise etc. And grounding to radiator pipes is a
no-no. That being said Im a little stumped on what to do and how to do it.
If you look on the map, the A is roughly where my "shack" (room) is. The
yellow ground is where I hammered in my own grounding rod. The purple
ground is where the house ground is and the electric meter. Its roughly 68
from point A to point G around the house. Its roughly 16 from point A to
    the yellow ground.
Additionally, the blue antenna (a n9tax slim Jim) will be mounted on a
piece of PVC on top of a roughly 9 galvanized steel pole in a concrete
hole. And finally, the red line across the backyard is where I intend to
hang my 102’ long g5rv antenna between two very far apart trees and somehow have the ladder line come into the window through window feeds (good luck everyone).
I bought 50 of 10awg stranded wire and a MFJ lightning arrestor because
that seemed like a good idea.
If anyone could give me some pointers on how to go about this I would
greatly appreciate it. If I could somehow keep the ground inside the house
that would be swell. My SO was not big on the idea of drilling through
exterior walls for a new hobby with good reason.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this and hopefully get me going. submitted by /u/enitsp

Difference between negative and positive RF energy?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 09:35 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rwfbff/difference_between_negative_and_positive_rf_energy/

In an isolated ground environment, many boats exhibit this trait, is there negative and positive RF energy, like in electricity? Is there a book that covers topics like this?
I ask this question out of curiosity more than practice. On my boat the
inner coax connector attaches to a the back stay cable and the other runs
to the ocean through a zinc anode. I am always careful to ensure I maintain polarity as a good practice but does polarity in the situation matter?
Except for this zinc anode the radio is not electrically connected to the
ocean or the backstay, only through the antenna connection.
    Thank you. submitted by /u/sage2791

Could I please get some help troubleshooting APRS with a Yaesu VX-8DR?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 12:48 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rw4bl0/could_i_please_get_some_help_troubleshooting_aprs/

Ive had this radio for years and own the factory and Nifty manuals and have read them over to death. Built in TNC, GPS module upgrade, the works. This radio can probably file your taxes. I recently moved to Silver City, NM
which is supposed to have excellent APRS digipeater coverage. I learned
very recently that I can, in theory, send messages to email or SMS text
using this radio, but try as I may, I absolutely cannot make it happen. It would be super handy for checking in while camping in the very nearby Gila wilderness.
Per the manual, I have the B band set to 144.390. GPS working fine, set at
    1200 bps, call sign entered, have tried WIDE1-1, WIDE2-1; WIDE1-1, WIDE2-2;
and WIDE3-3. Ive addressed to both EMAIL and EMAIL - 2 starting with my
email address followed by "test". Using a roll-up J pole hoisted on the
roof, I push the button to transmit, I can see it transmit, and nothing
ever comes back. No email. I can receive messages just fine, and have no
    other problems with the radio.
Same with sending position beacon packets. Followed every step, nothing
ever shows up on aprs.fi. I search my call sign and it isnt found.
Am I supposed to enter in the call sign of one of the digipeaters
somewhere? If so, where do I enter EMAIL or EMAIL - 2?
Can anyone help me figure out whats going on? Thank you so much.
Edit : I also just found this, and registered: http://w5urd.dstargateway.org/Dstar.do
Maybe I have to wait for that to go through to be allowed to use the digipeater? submitted by /u/Gullex

Had to reset it after I had to take a sabbatical from the Internet by
taking a service disruption to take care of another issue BUT I left ilthe openSPOT 2 PLUGGED IN !! (Perhaps this was a mistake??)
As a result, it GAVE UP ALL HOPE of finding the Internet as it keot
saying "Internet Unreachable" EVEN AFTER I got the Internet back
THING IS - The green light came on but it then goes to A RAPIDLY FLASHING
    RED light instead
Ive tried pressing the button AND unplugging it from the wall & then
plugging it back in again tio try to reset it AGAIN !!
    NOTHING seems to help
I check the list of WiFi networks & NONE of them is openSPOT2-AP
I even checked to see if it didnt somehow find the Internet again (As I
didnt change ANY of my network settings) & NOTHING !!
openspot2.local (Nor its IP address) doesnt work either as it (Not surprisingly) cant be reached
I have NO IDEA what to try next. Ideas?? submitted by /u/KB0OXD

Need Some Help getting a Mobilinkd TNC3 to Transmit

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 04:46 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rw9jfj/need_some_help_getting_a_mobilinkd_tnc3_to/

Im trying to get my Mobilinkd TNC3 to work with my Baofeng without much success. Im using a de-Googled Android phone running GrapheneOS and
APRSDroid first; soon Ill move onto WoAD for Winlink connectivity. After
some fine tuning on both the Baofeng (VOX and SQL are both set to 1) and
the TNC (the incoming volume) Im able to receive packets mostly okay. Im
using an ~18" Abbree to improve my reception compared to the crappy rubber
duck antennas that ship with the device.
The problem is Im not able to get APRSDroid to transmit at all. After some adjustment, I was able to get the Mobilinkd TNC3 application to send by adjusting the output volume. But, none of this is translating to successful transmission from within APRSDroid.
When I click "send position" from within APRSDroid I should see the TNC3s
red transmit indicator light up and I dont; much less the red transmit indicator on the Baofeng. To my eye the settings look right, Im set to use
TNC (KISS) via Bluetooth SPP. This should "just work" but something isnt
quite right here and Im not sure what it is. Does anyone here have any
ideas what I might be doing wrong? submitted by /u/s-ro_mojosa
