    Question about 2m/70cm yagi elements.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 09:00 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rv6c1o/question_about_2m70cm_yagi_elements/

I have calculated the dimensions and lengths for a 2 meter yagi that Id
like to build. what I cant find information on is how or if adding 70cm elements to the same boom would require me to change my measure for the 2
meter elements. Do the two sets of elements interact with each other in a significant way, or can they be ignored? I plan to use only one band at a
    time.
In other words, can I separately calculate a 2m and a 70cm yagi and then
just combine them to the same boom, or should I consider both sets when calculating my measures?
Thank you for looking and thank you for any thoughts! submitted by /u/LetsGetCoffee

What to do with old public safety radios?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 08:45 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rv5zut/what_to_do_with_old_public_safety_radios/

    The place I work has 40-50 Motorola RDU4100 and another 40-50 XTS1500
radios. They used to run on the city’s analog trunked frequencies but they’ve since moved to digital P25. The radios have all been replaced by
APX models and now the older ones are just sitting in a bin. They’re in various states of repair, some function fine, others are a bit worse for
the wear. I’m not an expert by any stretch, I’m just the poor sap they got to try and handle it. Seems a shame to just junk them. I guess we could
sell them as a lot... Any other suggestions? submitted by /u/aubiquitoususername

    EFHW question

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 06:06 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rv2gcq/efhw_question/

Forgive my ignorance. I’m an extra class op but antenna theory is still something I struggle with. I recently built a 40 meter EFHW for QRP ops. I
used a 49:1 UnUn and have it resonant on 7.200 to cover SSB portion of 40 meters. If I understand this correctly, the 49:1 provides the closest match
of 50 ohms from the coax to the antenna. In doing this, my coax acts as a counterpoise radial correct? With this being the case, would I benefit from having a RF choke on the radio end to eliminate any RFI noise? Would it
hurt my performance? Antenna in theory could handle about 50 watts, but I’m pushing 5 watts max through it on SSB. Thanks for the help. submitted

Use integrated phone antenna to receive/send frequencies at around 150 MHz?

I would like to use my phone (Xiaomi mi 10 ultra, pretty high-end) as a
sort of marine vhf so I can talk to other ships. The frequencies that are
    use are:
Tx: 156.8 MHz Rx: 161.4 MHz
Is it possible to send / receive and also listen to these frequencies using
the antennas in a modern, high end phone or not? If so, does anyone know an
app where you can dial in the tx and Rx frequencies individually and
manually? I only found "walkie talkie" apps that are basically chat groups
and discord calls in an app. submitted by /u/Mixo-Max

Antenna setup suggestions for home with an HT

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 09:32 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rv73ca/antenna_setup_suggestions_for_home_with_an_ht/

I have a small yard and am close to neighbors houses. I cant stand up a
    real antenna. Looking for suggestions.
I only got my license and bought a couple handhelds for offroading. Just
way better than GMRS (also licensed) or CB for what we do, especially being able to hit the repeaters in the national forests.
So thats all I have, is a couple cheapie HTs. One has a male SMC connector
and the other a female. The one that accepts male antennas is pretty nice
    being a 10w tri-band (2m/1.25m/70cm) with a cross-band repeater function
(TYT UV8000E). Great for offroading, got a nice tri-band for the HT. Love
to find a fixed tri-band antenna for it for the house. Even though the
1.25m band isnt used at all in this area near as I can tell.
Problem is the elevation around my house. I live just on the edge of the downside of a hill. I can hit all the main repeaters from the 2nd story of
my house if Im by a window. But its kinda iffy and bad quality, not really usable reliably. Doing an elevation line-of-sight to them shows that if I
just had another 10 feet or so up Id have great line-of-sight. Got a hill
just barely cresting between the house and most of the repeaters I hit. If
I stand on the roof with the HT, its great.
So Im thinking either an antenna in the attic or on the sides of the house
or off the chimney. Just something to be able to plug the HT into. A
    pigtail sitting on my desk.
Im still a newb when it comes to antennas. Looking for suggestions on
antennas, mounting suggestions, grounding and lightning arrest suggestions? Just whatever. Dont know what Im doing and I dont wanna do stupid stuff. Figured Id ask for suggestions. submitted by /u/altphil

    EZNEC now free

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 05:59 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rua5kw/eznec_now_free/

I am surprised this didnt get posted yesterday, but EZNEC Pro is now free.
I have been using the "Plus" version since v4. I downloaded it yesterday morning. The original free version was limited to something like 20
segments which made it not very useful at all. The Pro version allows
    something like 45,000 segments.
For those that arent aware, EZNEC is a very popular antenna modeling
software and (IMO) actually is the easiest to use. If youve ever wanted to learn to model antennas, now is a good time to learn.
    https://www.eznec.com/
Edit: For those of you that have never modeled before, I highly recommend reading the four part introduction to antenna modeling written by L. B.
Cebik (W4RNL). It appeared in QST a number of years ago and is available on
    the ARRL web site.
    http://www.arrl.org/antenna-modeling
Also, the help file for EZNEC contains a decent tutorial as well.

Strange Problem on Hand Held walkie-talkie

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 04:42 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rv0vp5/strange_problem_on_hand_held_walkietalkie/

Hi all, Got a bit of a strange one, wondering if anyone’s got any thoughts. Also apologies if this is not the right sub, not really sure where to post. I’ve got a pair of Midland handheld two-way radios (LXT460). They’d be pushing 10 years old now but are in good condition and worked the last time
    I used them.
I’ve just put fresh batteries in both for a trip, and when I’ve tried PTT or call, the other gets some signal, but just sounds like a sort of
chopping, static sound. What’s odd though, is that if I put the receiving handheld in monitor mode (or scan), it receives just fine and is perfectly clear. What’s more odd, is that the exact same thing happens with using either one, not unique to one. I can’t imagine how the exact same fault
would develop in both at the same time.
Based on this, I assume they’re transmitting fine, but somehow aren’t able to switch to full receive mode when it gets a signal.
If anyone has any solutions, or just ideas about why this is happening I’d
    be very interested!
Edit: Tried separating as suggested, it now seems one functions normally
but other has the same problem… submitted by /u/88_notes

Why are regenerative receivers superior to reflex receivers, and/or am I misunderstanding the principles of these circuits?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 07:30 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rurshu/why_are_regenerative_receivers_superior_to_reflex/

The reflex radio circuit completely fell out by the time WWII came around
but the regenerative receiver stuck around in cheap radios into the
transistor era and is still used today on things like garage door openers
and toy walkie talkies. They seem to operate on very similar principles,
the main difference being that the signal in a reflex receiver is
demodulated before it’s fed back into the tube or transistor input whereas the feedback is before the demodulation stage in a regenerative receiver.
If anything, if the goal is to build a simple radio with a single tube that efficiently outputs high quality audio the reflex receiver seems like the better bet, so why did the regenerative topology win out?
I know a lot about analogue electronics and a little about digital stuff
but not very much at all about the world of RF so excuse me!! submitted

What is the biggest rotator available that can safely handle the Mosley Pro-96-S?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2022 03:02 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rum1ek/what_is_the_biggest_rotator_available_that_can/

Ive been trying for days to find a rotator that can handle a really large
hf beam, such as the Mosley Pro-96-S.
The Yaesu G-2800DXA can handle the wind load, but when calculating the "K" Factor it already exceeds it by 295 not including the mast weight.
The Hy-Gain HDR-300 only has 25 sq ft of wind load where the Mosley clocks
    in at 27.9 sq ft.

Are there any amateur radio rotator options available or would you need something crazy commercial?
OTOH did a I miss something in the calculation?

Hi there. Building a new house and have effectively just cat6 everywhere
for all entertainment and communications purposes. BUT I also like
listening to analog FM stations, want to get local HDTV broadcasts, and
want to be able to play around with my emerging radio hobby and use some
roof antennas. I’m planning to wire LMR400 from a junction point on the
roof to a main rack, and from there to a few locations in the house, and assuming that would serve me decently ok for all of those purposes. Am I
off base at all? I realize for home AV use the coax would typically be a
higher loss 75ohm cable. And running this into a home rack area is not the quietest, but looking for some decent flexibility and functionality
balanced out. Any tips welcome! submitted by /u/fpvga

What's the difference between LPF and BPF in context of bandwidth setting?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 01:00 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ruxdt5/whats_the_difference_between_lpf_and_bpf_in/

Im used to simple RX/TX bandwidth configurations, on my VHF FM rig its
either narrow, normal, or wide. It seems to be much more complex on my new
HF SDR rig, and the instructions dont say anything about what the settings mean.
Below are the options I have when in SSB. For 20m and 40m the UK bandplan
says to use 2.7k, but what is the difference between 2.7k LPF and 2.7k
BPF ? Both seem to give the same result.
Theres also a bunch of strange narrow options. For example the 300Hz 500Hz option sets the bandwidth to 500Hz but moves the tuned frequency 300Hz away from what the dial is tuned to.
Ive Googled the question but no luck finding anything.
The SSB bandwidth options available on my radio: 300Hz 500Hz 300Hz 550Hz
