Antennas... has it all been done?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2021 07:29 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rfy14h/antennas_has_it_all_been_done/

So, I recently ordered an antenna analyzer, the iportable ip60z, and Im
looking forward to using it to test an antenna that Im currently in the
    process of building.
Also, Im a CNC machinist, with access to both modern and manual milling machines and lathes, as well as tons of scrap and leftover steel and
aluminum solid round and tubing. We have every type of drill, tap and
cutting tool, too. I can use all this stuff for my own projects, and have
never been turned down when asking for material for my various projects.
So, my question is this: I dont see a lot of "hot off the presses" new
antenna designs when perusing the various online sellers. Ive got ideas for
    a few...
But why is it that there dont seem to be many newly invented antenna
designs? Has it all been done already?
Thanks! (edit: spelling) submitted by /u/VisualEyez33

    IC-9700 and Linux

    Posted: 13 Dec 2021 08:29 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rfz6bp/ic9700_and_linux/

Greetings! Ive got my Icom 9700 and it worked great with Windows (Winlink, WSJT-X, HRD). I decided to switch back over to Linux and Im having some difficulty.
Im trying to get Pat to work so I have Winlink capabilities but Im having issues with rig control using Hamlib. When I try to use rigctld, I get two outcomes depending on how I address the transceiver.
    If I specify a CIV address, like so: rigctld -m 3081 -r /dev/ttyUSB0 -s
    57600 -c A2h
itll key up the radio for a couple seconds, then unkey and give me the following output: rig_open: error = Protocol error icom_rig_open: rig error getting frequency retry=0, err=Protocol error frame.c(439):icom_transaction return(-5) icom.c(752):icom_get_usb_echo_off return(-5) icom.c(752):icom_get_usb_echo_off return(-5)icom.c(1002):icom_rig_open return(-8) rig.c(1028):rig_open return(-8) /dev/ttyUSB0 Success
If I dont specify the CIV address, rigctld -m 3081 -r /dev/ttyUSB0 -s 57600 itll key up the radio and keep it keyed until I ^C, at which point I just
get my prompt, and no output.
Here are the settings from the radio side:
    Menu>Set>Connectors>CI-V: Page 1/3 CI-V Baud Rate - 19200 CI-V Address -
    A2h CI-V Transceive - Off USB/LAN... ->REMOTE Transceive Address 00h Page
    2/3 CI-V USB Port - Unlink from [REMOTE] CI-V USB Baud Rate - 57600 CI-V
USB Echo Back - Off CI-V Data Baud Rate - 9600 Page 3/3 CI-V DATA Echo Back
    - Off
Im certain its me doing something wrong, I just dont know what. Any ideas?

Random rant. Can we please finally have USB-C PD in HTs?

    Posted: 14 Dec 2021 04:58 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rg6xzf/random_rant_can_we_please_finally_have_usbc_pd_in/

Random rant. Can we please finally have all the HTs lineup design updated
to feature USB-C Power Delivery charging?
Cradle chargers are super useful when keeping radio atop of the desk at
home. DC barrel chargers are kind of universal if we consider DIY buffs
with their home labs full of electronics. But when I travel and consider
taking an HT with me I often decide not to because the need to pack a
separate charger or spare batteries for it.
Think what you always take with you when leaving home for more than a day -
a mobile phone and a charger for it. Unless you have some weird niche or
old device, your mobile phone charger is USB-C and most likely it follows a
PD standard. USB-C charging is a standard nowadays (side note for Apple
users: modern iPhone chargers are USB-C too, they just pack USB-C to
Lightning cable instead C2C used in all other mobile devices). If you
forgot your charger, chances are you can easily borrow one from a random
person not to mention buying one. Good luck finding someone with (or a
place to buy) one of like 10 different sizes barrel connector ended charger that also provides that one exactly required voltage and amperage when you
are on your business conference trip to Vegas or when on vacations in the Caribbean, or wherever.
I can charge my phone, laptop, headphones, even electric toothbrush and
shaver with the same USB-C charger. But not my HT. So I just skip taking
the HT if I need to pack another charger, cradle, special cable or adapter
    only for it.
And no, micro-USB will not do. This connector is being phased out. USB-C everything or GTFO dear Yaesu, Icom and Kenwood./rant submitted by /u/streamofstars

Drop in chargers, that also charge a second battery

    Posted: 14 Dec 2021 02:47 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rg4x68/drop_in_chargers_that_also_charge_a_second_battery/

Back in the 1990s, Motorolas MicroTAC line had charger bases that not only heald the phone, but could hold the battery alone, or a second battery in a second slot. They looked like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/142032148063
I use a 1990s cell phone as my example, cuz while it seems SUPER OBVIOUS to
me, I cant come up with even a SINGLE EXAMPLE outside of that one... I
mean, sure, the era replaceable battery in cell phones is dead now, but for many years, there were replaceable batteries that couldnt be charged
outside of the phone, and the cell phone companies wonder why it wasnt a popular feature...
Which brings me to my point (Yes, I do have one): Ham radios have
batteries. They are still replaceable. We often carry more than one at a
time. For example, an average TH-D74 consumes at least 6 a day... And then
how is one to charge them all overnight?
I pick fun at the TH-D74, but Im actually looking at the AnyTone D878UVII.
It doesnt come with a belt clip, and one gets the belt clip with the extra battery... The extra battery is cheaper than the vinyl case, and cheaper
than a Kenwood belt clip (Sorry... Cant help it... I love my Kenwood, I promise)... So I dont mind... Except... How do I charge the damn thing?
Surely this is a problem that haunts people post-Motorola MicroTAC...
Surely Im not just cray... submitted by /u/KD7TKJ

    Help with schematic

    Posted: 13 Dec 2021 12:23 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rfp4n0/help_with_schematic/

I was in a ham club several years ago and one of the members worked on
antennas as a professional. He brought a thing he built and showed it to
me. It was a housing (I think copper tubing) with connectors at both ends,
and he had 2 resistors in parallel inside (I think they were 100 ohm). He
used them to simulate coax for testing and setting SWR and adjusting
antenna length. It was a nifty device. Unfortunately he passed and none of
the members remember how he built it. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Id like to build one. Any help would be appreciated. submitted by /u/mwhite1249

Ive been thinking about this for a few days -- I think I have my answer,
    but want to ask anyways.
I drew a whip antenna because its easy to illustrate: Does length of
antenna include the wire inside of the connector? IE: is antenna length determined by where the shielding starts?

Single Op Low Power CW from MO. Threw a dipole up and made a some contacts.
Had some local noise that was somewhat limiting, but managed 132 contacts,
35 State/Provinces and one country (Got PY5 Sunday.)
Band propagation was weird, but that is part of the charm of the contest

Hightlights of Lamakaan Annual Radio Convention - 4

    Posted: 12 Dec 2021 10:15 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rf8zwb/hightlights_of_lamakaan_annual_radio_convention_4/

The fourth edition of the Lamakaan Annual Radio Convention (LARC-4)
concluded at the Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology
(MJCET). The two-day annual event saw 400 Ham operators (amateur radio operators) from across the country.
Ashhar Farhan, the owner of Lamakaan and co-founder of LARC, shares that
the event will provide an opportunity for the ham operators to showcase
their experimentations with newer radio techniques and wireless
    technologies.
The event also saw the unveiling of sBitx, a very hackable SDR transceiver according to Farhan
“The convention is intended to encourage experimenting and sharing of knowledge associated with radio communication. Experimentation is very important for any field of science to develop. Here several amateur radio operators interact with each other about their work and also attend
workshops to enhance their knowledge in the subject,” he said.
Ashhar Farhan, the owner of Lamakaan and co-founder of LARC, provided a
ground to various ham operators to showcase their amateur experimentations. ICOM India Dealer radiobrewery.com demonstrated the latest ICOM Transceiver
and other equipment at the flea market. Yagi antenna manufacturer – www.hobbytivity.com also demonstrated various 3D printed dual-band yagi antennas during the meet.
“The convention is intended to encourage experimenting and sharing of knowledge associated with radio communication. Experimentation is very important for any field of science to develop. Here several amateur radio operators interact with each other about their work and also attend
workshops to enhance their knowledge in the subject,” Farhan said.
“It took us one year to develop the up-converter,” said Amarendra Prasad, one of the team members who worked on the projects. Explaining about the up-converter, he said, “Normally, one needs to use the Software Defined
Radio (SDR) receiver just to listen to the conversations happening on the satellite or use a transceiver to communicate, which could cost more than a lakh. For the indigenously developed converters, we sourced locally
available 95 cm dish (costing about Rs 1500) and LNB (Rs 150) to receive
QO-100 signals. The real success was in designing the circuit board which
could receive signals from the dish (10 GHz) and convert them into 740 MegaHertz.”
Three renowned radio designers from abroad, Pete Juliano, N6QW and Bill
Meara, N2CQR and Jerry Buxton N0JY also interact virtually with the participants.
