Evidently someone made a Facebook posting that the FCC will start
collecting $35 for amateur radio licensing on July 15.
This is not correct. The FCC will start collecting fees for services
regulated by the FCC Media Bureau and Office of Engineering and
Technology on July 15. Amateur radio is regulated by the Wireless
Bureau.
Current best guess is that fee collection for amateur radio won't start
for a month or two.
Thinking about it, though. Thirty-five dollars for a ten year license
is $3.50 per year. While I know people got used to not having to pay
for a license, it looks like we'll have to help cover administrative
costs at the FCC, as required by Congress. Giving up a fancy cup of
coffee each year to cover the license fee doesn't seem so bad.
I'll let you know if I hear/see anything else on the topic.
Hope you had a great 4th! The HF bands were really open over the
weekend. I managed to snag three new countries and my first 6 meter
European contact.
