• WG 56 announcement

    From wald@math.uchicago.edu@21:1/5 to All on Wed Apr 7 18:46:23 2021
    Thanks for Duke for running the last contest, and for liking my clue. In
    honor of the coming of spring, for WG 56, please write up to three clues,
    each for a word or phrase containing the letters of WARM, in that order,
    but possibly with letters and/or spaces in between. Bonus clues as
    always are welcome.

    The deadline is the end of Saturday, April 17, in your time zone.

    I'll amend my clue slightly to this, on the basis that "beginning" works as a noun but "starting" doesn't.

    Beginning to stink with heat? It could create a hum (5)

    And now, my interpretations of the clues; please let me know
    if I've missed anything.

    Duke:
    Roman grew unhappy with Caesar, maybe (9)
    Caesar, maybe = definition (of WARMONGER)
    unhappy = anagram indicator
    ROMAN GREW anagrammed = WARMONGER

    Rob:
    Beginning to stink with heat? It could create a hum (5)
    It could create a hum = definition (of SWARM)
    Beginning to stink = S
    heat = WARM
    S + WARM = SWARM

    And now, my judgements:

    Duke:
    Roman grew unhappy with Caesar, maybe (9)
    Good surface, and a nice, straightforward anagram.

    Rob:
    Beginning to stink with heat? It could create a hum (5)
    Okay surface (slightly less smooth than Duke's) and a
    nice, straightforward charade.

    And the ranking:
    First place to Duke's ancient clue.
    Second to Rob's scented clue.

    Duke?
