    From Rob@21:1/5 to All on Tue Mar 2 08:58:01 2021
    Thanks to Kevin for picking my clue as the winner of round 135.

    The word to be clued in this round is APOSTROPHE (10)

    The professional clue to be judged against is this from Rufus in Telegraph 25,985:

    Punctuation mark perhaps too freely used (10)

    Up to three clues can be entered per person, and the closing date is March 12 (end of the day in your time zone). Have fun.

    Thanks for your entries. Kevin, two of yours have me baffled!

    David A:
    Vacant possession (10)
    Cryptic def: apostrophe is used to indicate a missing (vacant) letter as well as possession.

    Rufus wasn't short on its use either! (10)
    Is this a comment on the couple of occasions when errant apostrophes have slipped into Rufus's clues, or is there more to it?

    Kevin:
    One after h in 'catch'! (10)
    ????

    A wine-sop recalled that guy Mark (10)
    A + (PORT SOP) rev + HE, def = "mark"

    Secondly, I'll don topless leather garments from Hartsdale (10)
    ????

    Mark:
    Mark indulged too, perhaps (10)
    def = "mark", TOOPERHAPS (anag)

    Luciano:
    Address a piece of mail to an unconstrained visionary (10)
    def = "address" (in the oratorial sense)
    A + POST + (p)ROPHE(t)

    What's it's mistake? (10)
    Cryptic def

    Duke:
    Indication of contractions after a pregnancy starts: obstetrician begins to stop her seizure (10)
    def = "indication of contractions", A + P(regnancy) + O(bstetrician) + STOPHER (anag)

    Steve:
    A greengrocer will often use one of these, or a pet shop less commonly (10)
    def = "A greengrocer will often use one of these", ORAPETSHOP (anag)

    Yes, Rob, it's a comment suportive of Rufus's clue really with its (pronoun) contrasted the compiler's use, and it's for it is!

    One after h in 'catch'! (10)

    It's an &lit.

    Straight reading: One after [the letter] h in [the seven-character string] 'catch'
    is the final single-quote of 'catch', which is an APOSTROPHE (a closing single quote is the same character as an apostrophe).

    Cryptic reading:
    One = A
    after = POST
    catch = ROPE (in the verb sense of "seize with a rope")
    H in ROPE = ROP(H)E
    A + POST + ROPHE = APOSTROPHE.

    Secondly, I'll don topless leather garments from Hartsdale (10)

    Secondly, I'll = definition (the second character of I'll is an APOSTROPHE)
    don = CAPO (in the sense of "organized crime boss")
    CAPO topless = APO
    leather = STROP
    garments from Hartsdale = outer letters of HARTSDALE = HE
    APO + STROP + HE = APOSTROPHE

    Kevin Wald wald@math.uchicago.edu | Some apostrophe nominally http://www.math.uchicago.edu/~wald | is something special (6)

    Vacant possession (10)

    Yes, I quite like this. I think it's just about fair although does require a good degree of lateral thought.

    Rufus wasn't short on its use either! (10)
    Cryptic def

    It works when you know what the pro clue was, but I'm not sure it would stand up on its own.

    Kevin:
    One after h in 'catch'! (10)
    A + POST + ROP(H)E, &lit

    Clueing a 10-letter word in 16 letters and with an &lit is quite a feat of brevity, so well done. Strictly speaking (as something of a typography nerd) that is not an apostrophe, it's a closing quotation mark, but that's a minor quibble.

    A wine-sop recalled that guy Mark (10)
    A + (PORT SOP) rev + HE, def = "mark".

    The capital letter is maybe a bit of a cheat in the definition but otherwise this is sound, albeit with a rather vague definition.

    Secondly, I'll don topless leather garments from Hartsdale (10)
    def = "Secondly I'll", (C)APO + STROP + H(artsdal)E

    Not sure I would have ever got this without help... I was thinking leather garments were CHAPS!
    So it's quite convoluted but I like the switch of "don" from putting on clothes to a Mafia boss.

    Mark:
    Mark indulged too, perhaps (10)
    def = "mark", TOOPERHAPS (anag)

    The capital letter works better at the start of the clue, of course, but I still think the definition is a bit too vague to be fair.

    Luciano:
    Address a piece of mail to an unconstrained visionary (10)
    def = "address" (in the oratorial sense)
    A + POST + (p)ROPHE(t)

    I like "unconstrained" as an indicator to remove first and last letters, and the surface is one of the best here.

    What's it's mistake? (10)
    Cryptic def

    Perhaps a little too obvious?

    Duke:
    Indication of contractions after a pregnancy starts: obstetrician begins to stop her seizure (10)
    def = "indication of contractions", A + P(regnancy) + O(bstetrician) + STOPHER (anag)

    Picks up the contraction theme and runs with it very well! Quite wordy, is my only criticism.

    Steve:
    A greengrocer will often use one of these, or a pet shop less commonly (10)
    def = "A greengrocer will often use one of these", ORAPETSHOP (anag)

    I thought a greengrocer would have to feature in at least one of the clues, and here it is. Nicely found anagram which first the surface perfectly.

    Some very nice clues here. A close-run thing between the top three, but I think Steve's pet shop anagram just edges it.
    Kevin's &lit in second and Luciano prophet mail in third.

    Thank's to all who entered ;o)

    Thanks for that, and for running the comp. I'm currently in the throes of moving home and am unable to moderate the next event. Kevin?
