ASCWC 263 Announcement
From

All on Mon Aug 30 12:03:57 2021
Thanks for Kevin for running the last ASCWC and congratulations to Rob for his winning clue. Remember ASCWC? Ah, those were the days.
But we're back! Summer is nearly gone, at least in the Northern Hemisphere, so it's time to take R.P.C. seriously once again. With that in mind, write one, two or three clues for
ENDING (6)
and post them in this thread. Let's have some fun in here!
Deadline: Monday, September 6 -- the unofficial end of summer in the US.
Have fun,
Duke

Well, that was disappointing. But here are the entries in ASCWC 263. I include Steve's because I explicitly extended the deadline. Please help me correct any misunderstandings on my part. Perhaps David can elicidate his clue a little.
For ENDING:
From Luciano:
Demon escapes imminent termination (6)
IMPENDING minus IMP; def. is "termination"
Close friend in gaol's constrained (6)
Hidden word; def. is "close"
What Gog and Magog do re Armageddon? (6)
Gog and Magog appear doing the "ending" in some Armageddon stories, and they both "end in g."
From David:
Never say never, presumably! (6)
Cryptic definition....I think.
From Steve:
Shutting down sleazy gin den (6)
Anagram ("sleazy") of GIN DEN; def. is "shutting down."
Let me know if I'm off track,

Here are the entries in ASCWC 263 ("ENDING"), with my thoughts. Who is the winner? This is not revealed until the end.
From Luciano:
Demon escapes imminent termination (6)
IMPENDING minus IMP; def. is "termination"
Very nice. Smooth surface, fair wordplay and definition.
Close friend in gaol's constrained (6)
Hidden word; def. is "close"
Do the British still write "gaol"? This clue was easy, but the surface works nicely.
What Gog and Magog do re Armageddon? (6)
Gog and Magog appear doing the "ending" in some Armageddon stories, and they both "end in g."
This one requires some outside knowledge, but also some lateral thinking. Nice.
From David:
Never say never, presumably! (6)
Cryptic definition
I'm unpersuaded. "Never" (not even once) doesn't match up with "ending" (it happened, then it stopped).
From Steve:
Shutting down sleazy gin den (6)
Anagram ("sleazy") of GIN DEN; def. is "shutting down."
Nothing wrong here. Why anyone would shut down a sleazy gin den, well, that's another question. A nice clue.
And the winner is...Luciano, for the escaping demon. I invite him to moderate the next one.
Thanks to those who played. I still think this group can survive. But I've been wrong before...
