• SCWC 380 announcement

From Rob@21:1/5 to All on Mon May 3 08:26:40 2021
Thanks to Kevin for having heard of smoots and picking my clue as the winner.

This round kicks off a couple of days later than it would otherwise have done as I was laid low by the after-effects of the Covid vaccination.

So, please work, er, feverishly, on clueing the word FEVERISH (8).

Up to three entries per person and the closing date is the end of May 11.

    Rob

Thanks all for working feverishly on your clues. Here are my readings, let me know if I have missed anything:

    Luciano:
See heifers very agitated? Very (8)
HEIFERS + V (anag), def = "very (agitated)"

Metal gun, when returned, is hot, really hot (8)
FE + REV (verb, rev) + IS + H, def = "really hot"

    I've fresh bananas in a stew (8)
IVEFRESH (anag), def = "in a stew"

    Duke:
    Always carp about tense (8)
FISH around EVER, def = "tense"

    David A:
Always into fish with suitable haste laid low (8)
EVER inside FISH, and is this a double def with def 1 = "with suitable haste", def 2 = "laid low"?

    Kevin:
"Hot iron," a cleric reflected, "is hot" (8)
    def = "Hot", FE + REV (rev) + IS + H

Furious, contemptuous remark about violent chaos-sower (8)
Not totally sure I have this right: def = "Furious", FEH (contemptuous remark) around V (violent) + ERIS?

Interrupting Friday night hush with excitement (8)
EVE inside FRI + SH, def = "with excitement"

What is the indicator for taking the first letter of "violent"? Or is V for violent an abbreviation I am not familiar with?

V is sometimes used as an abbreviation in ratings (of TV shows, say) with that meaning. It's common enough
to be listed in Merriam-Webster's 11th Collegiate (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/v).

Thanks again. Back from a weekend away and time for the verdict:

    Luciano:
See heifers very agitated? Very (8)
HEIFERS + V (anag), def = "very (agitated)"

A purist might quibble about "agitated" doing two jobs in this clue but I think it is OK and the clue works nicely.

Metal gun, when returned, is hot, really hot (8)
FE + REV (verb, rev) + IS + H, def = "really hot"

Nice misdirection with "gun" which took me a moment to make the connection, and the link from wordplay to definition is very good.

    I've fresh bananas in a stew (8)
IVEFRESH (anag), def = "in a stew"

Best of the three, concise, fun and tasty.

    Duke:
    Always carp about tense (8)
FISH around EVER, def = "tense"

The form "Y X about" for "X about/around Y" doesn't seem quite right to me although I can see the argument for it. Otherwise good surface and definition.

    David A:
Always into fish with suitable haste laid low (8)
EVER inside FISH, and is this a double def with def 1 = "with suitable haste", def 2 = "laid low"

Even with the explanation of the intended surface reading it doesn't totally make sense. I think choosing one of the two definitions would make for a smoother clue.

    Kevin:
"Hot iron," a cleric reflected, "is hot" (8)
    def = "Hot", FE + REV (rev) + IS + H

This is fun and put me in mind of "obvious troll is obvious" style memes. No quibbles with any of it.

Furious, contemptuous remark about violent chaos-sower (8)
def = "Furious", FEH (contemptuous remark) around V (violent) + ERIS

I didn't know V = violent although guessed it could be to do with ratings. Most interesting wordplay of all the clues here and the surface works fine.

Interrupting Friday night hush with excitement (8)
EVE inside FRI + SH, def = "with excitement"

A similar quibble to Duke's clue, regarding the insertion indicator, but again maybe I am being unfair. Good surface.

    And the results:
A close battle between Luciano's bananas and Kevin's hot iron. I think Kevin just shades it.

    Over to you.
