• WG 57 announcement: J* by 2 May

    From Duke@21:1/5 to All on Sat Apr 24 19:38:23 2021
    Thanks to Kevin for running WG 56, and for liking my clue.

    The last few WG competitions have not had very many entries, so I'm aiming at a nice broad audience with this one. Sumer is, I think we can agree, icumen in, and it won't be long before we are in its heart, the months of June and July.

    So this challenge is to write a clue for any word -- one word -- starting with J.

    Deadline is midnight my time (Pacific Daylight, UTC - 7) Sunday, May 2nd.

    As always, have fun,
    Duke

    Hare let out a yell about justice being perverted a little (10)

    Are we doing the usual three clues, or just one this time?

    A few hours late, but I'll throw in a couple of bonuses:

    Preserve stuff (3)

    Wreck a job by resorting to a load of made-up words (11)

    Thanks to those who entered, particularly Rob, who made this much more fun than it might have been.

    Here are the clues, but I haven't quite sussed out Kevin's. Help?

    From Kevin:
    Hare let out a yell about justice being perverted a little (10)
    ? JACKRABBIT, but I don't quite see it. I'm thinking J + ABIT about ACK, but that doesn't do it.

    From Luciano:
    Can Baptist evangelist trick any guy? (4) Luciano
    JOHN: quintuple definition: Can (as in lavatory), Baptist, Evangelist,
    trick (as in patron of sex worker), and "any guy"

    From Rob:
    Preserve stuff (3)
    JAM: Double definition

    Wreck a job by resorting to a load of made-up words (11)
    JABBERWOCKY: Anagram ("by resorting") of WRECKAJOB, def. is "a load...words"

    Hare = definition
    let out a yell = BARK
    about = CA
    justice = J
    being perverted = reversal indicator
    BARK + CA + J reversed = JACKRAB
    a little = BIT
    JACKRAB + BIT = JACKRABBIT

    Here are the entries in WG 57, with my opinions. Following one common custom, the winner is revealed at the end.

    From Kevin:
    Hare let out a yell about justice being perverted a little (10)
    JACKRABBIT: rev. ("being perverted") BARK + CA + J, + BIT

    Sorry I missed it. Fair construction, amusing surface.

    From Luciano:
    Can Baptist evangelist trick any guy? (4) Luciano
    JOHN: quintuple definition: Can (as in lavatory), Baptist, Evangelist, trick (as in patron of sex worker), and "any guy"

    Nicely done; you don't see five definitions every day, and the surface works. Nice switch on "trick."

    From Rob:
    Preserve stuff (3)
    JAM: Double definition

    Neat, clean, and delicious on toast.

    Wreck a job by resorting to a load of made-up words (11)
    JABBERWOCKY: Anagram ("by resorting") of WRECKAJOBBY, def. is "a load...words"

    Nice anagram and smooth surface. I might pick a nit with the definition, but I get it.

    These are four strong entries, but only one can wear the coveted WG 57 crown. And the winner is...Luciano, for five definitions in six words. Very nice!

    I hope you enjoyed WG 57.
    Duke
