I'll guess that the last one on your list is odd man out.
    My attempts to add are
    average
    implore

I'm less than happy with one other on the list, but can say with almost certainty that:

    mandate
    protest
    procure
brigand <<<-- does not belong, but cutlass does
    reagent

Maybe the next player would like to chose which two of the following three words should be appended to the list:

    dormice
    kittens
    pigeons

That was my iffy one, but I can argue mechanically for its correctness.

Well, the rule that would let me begrudgingly accept reagent would let
me accept both of those, but again, one of them only begrudgingly. It's
not clear we're working to the same rule, we'll need a judge's decision.

so far it's correct that 'reagent' is the odd man out,
and 'porcine' is a proper addition - of the other
additions, they'd (all but one) be on a similar but
    different list

My idea is supported by your choice of odd man out, and would mean
"kittens" does not belong in the list. (However, "puppies" would belong...)

I'm not really that confident this is the right answer, though, as we
only have a sample of 5 candidates from OP.
