    Or simply for that s/n characteristic, no components were available at
    the 'right' size, (manufacturing choke everywhere), but ample larger
    sensors are available from inventories.

    Well, Sony could have put a larger lens on that phone and used all 20MP
    of the sensor. Never mind about the protruding "blob" (they could also
    added a filter thread, or maybe even a lens mount ;-) ).

    Theoretically, it might be possible to produce an add-on lens that would allow the camera to use the whole sensor,
    it would be a choice. But most people don't even know their phone has different resolution modes anyway.
