• Beware of dry/hard food!

From John Doe@21:1/5 to All on Wed Sep 15 23:58:04 2021
It can hurt your cat's throat. I was told that about 20 years ago from a
local veterinarian. But the effects had never been obvious. Recently, I met someone who had no idea and apparently didn't much care why their cat could
not meow... "It just happened, the vet says she's healthy ". Probably the
same vet who declawed it. It's inability to meow was probably caused by them feeding it hard food only.

I leave hard food out for mine to snack on, plus wet meals. One of my cats
was eating more dry food than the others and its voice changed. I immediately suspected the dry food and started feeding it wet food only. I think it's
voice has changed back, but in any case surely that was the problem (I'll
    post a follow-up later).

Now I've seen/heard it with my own 2 eyes. If you feed any dry food, pay attention to the sound of their meow. Probably depends on several factors
like the cat and the specific dry food, and possibly other things.

    Good luck!

I realize posting about a sensitive issue might attract the attention of hateful trolls like "reilloc" and "Peter W". But it's precisely on topic and IMO very important information.

Thank you, that'd be interesting. I'd vaguely recalled that a mix of wet
and dry is best but I don't remember why and, indeed, with multiple
cats, I guess it can be a challenge to watch consumption to make sure
    each is getting enough balance.

Yep. Her regular sounding meow is back. There was another symptom that
came and went in the same timeframe. I'm very confident that was the
    problem.

FWIW... The dry food it snacks on can be put in a plastic zipper bag
(maybe 1/5 full) with some water. It saturates, and when served it remains moist for a long time. Probably better to use too little water than too
much water in the mixture, it should not be runny. Rinsing that bag
opening under running water helps keep it clean between servings. Probably refrigerate. It probably doesn't taste good, but "Toobig" can cope with it
    for necessary snacks.

That's great, thank you for the update. (-:

I had one cat that was vocal only at night, in kind of a, "where have
you all gone?" when we were in bed.

Ah, interesting to know how absorbent it is. I'd separately wondered
about foods that are very moist indeed, having seen how eager some cats
can be to gobble up treats like Webbox's Lick-e-Lix.

If cats are demand-eaters and are good drinkers, a high quality dry food (which is NOT "Meow-Mix"), will be an important part of a good diet. Cats that are either dehydrated, poor drinkers, cannot be allowed to be demand-eaters for concerns about obesity-
or-similar need to have their dry-food intake carefully monitored. Guys and gals, this is neither rocket-science nor exotic, special or hidden information.
So, lets us look at some terms:

"Can hurt your cat's throat." Yep, so can lye, sawdust and other materials. Tell me something I DO NOT already know. Dry food *will* do damage under specific conditions and if not reasonably monitored. the key is monitoring, a concept that is apparently
foreign to Doe, who seems to feel that everything should be automatic. Pets require interaction, care, feeding, even love...

    All concepts foreign to DOE.
