Shirley Murphy never participated in RPCC, but she still touched the
lives of many of us. She wrote the Joe Gray series of books. I read my
first one after hearing someone on RPCC recommend it. That reading
changed my life! Before reading Cat on the Edge I had not realized that
books about cats with exceptional abilities, or even books focusing on
cats, were a thing.
Exposure to Joe Grey and Dulcie encouraged me to look for other
cat-focused books, and set me on the path to follow my fascination with
what has become my favorite genre. Thanks to Shirley, the ideas that a
cat can change to human form and back, that cats can talk to humans and
other creatures, and that cats can outsmart humans don't seem so odd any
more.
I am very sorry that no more Joe Gray books will be coming out. I will
always wonder whether Chief of Police Max Harper ever figures out for
himself that Clyde's cat talks.
Ms. Murphy, thank you for opening my eyes to this type of writing. You
will be missed.
