I dunno about that. When I went to my Walmart Thursday, the checker
tried to stop me on my way out. It's been very very many months since
that last happened. Must be an uptick in shoplifting here, too.

People are under pressure for a number of reasons, including inflation. Shoplifting is up all over the country.

"Tidal wave of shoplifting takes laundry pods off the shelf
Tide pods and similar products are latest shoplifting target: They serve as street currency"

"Retailers don’t like to discuss shoplifting, which in industry terms is described as shrinkage.

Neither CVS nor BJ’s returned emails asking about the new developments. Other drugstore chains in the area also failed to return inquiries.

But retail groups are well aware of the trends.

“It’s definitely an issue that the National Retail Federation is tracking,” said Lottie Watts, spokeswoman for the Washington, D.C.-based trade group, about shoplifting in general.

The organization puts out an annual theft survey and its 2022 report found that an increase in shoplifting that came with the COVID-19 pandemic is still a factor.

Overall, the average “shrink rate” in 2021 was 1.4 percent, according to the report.

That represented a loss of $94.5 billion in retail sales, up from $90.8 billion in 2020."

"Shrinkage" is the difference between what the store receives and what it sells. There are other causes besides shoplifting. Items that can't be sold because they were damaged are included in shrinkage. Sometimes stores don't actually receive
everything they thought they received. When they do an inventory that stuff becomes part of the shrinkage. Most of the shrinkage is items that were stolen by customers and employees.

Bull shit. It's not conservatives flocking to Portland. Liberalism
attracts liberals and other freeloaders. It doesn't matter how many
highways and byways lead to Portland. Birds of a feather...

I replied to the wrong thread. However, what I wanted to say is this: If
you have more people stealing than people buying, of course financial performance will suffer. The next time one of you liberals puts two and
two together and comes up with four, it will be the first time.

If you have more stealing than buying, the receipt checkers will have something actually efficacious to do. Be dangerous, too - Walmart will
have to give them hazard pay. And a bandolier of bear spray. If I were
a receipt checker, I'd want a Glock - or at least a bag of tasers.

I knew a cab driver who had a taser. He used it on a drunk one night. All it did was make the drunk mad and got him beat up. The consensus was that he had it coming for being a dumbass.
