It sounds like they are a lot of things.

"Samuel Otis Brinton (born c. 1988)[1] is an American nuclear engineer
and LGBTQ activist serving as the deputy assistant secretary of Spent
Fuel and Waste Disposition in the Office of Nuclear Energy[2][3] In
2019, Brinton had been the head of advocacy and government affairs at
the non-profit LGBTQ youth suicide prevention organization The Trevor Project.[4] Identifying as gender-fluid, Brinton uses they and them
pronouns. In October 2022, Brinton was charged with felony theft after allegedly stealing a woman's suitcase worth over $2,000 from a luggage
conveyor belt at Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport. [5]

    Early life and education
Raised in Perry, Iowa, Brinton's parents were Southern Baptist
missionaries who disapproved of their child's attraction to a male
friend from school.[6] Brinton graduated from Kansas State University
with a Bachelor of Science in nuclear engineering and vocal music. They
have a dual Master of Science degree in nuclear engineering, technology
and policy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.[7]

    Activism
As a youth Brinton underwent conversion therapy, an experience they
described as "barbaric" and "painful" in a 2018 New York Times op-ed.[8]
With the Trevor Project, they founded the #50Bills50States campaign to
have the practice banned throughout the U.S.[9] Calling themself a
survivor of conversion therapy, Brinton was the first of such
individuals to testify before the United Nations Convention against
Torture regarding the practice in November 2014.[10] In 2020, Brinton coordinated with three of Anchorage's openly gay city council members to
draft the city's ban on conversion therapy on minors, which became law
in August,[11] joining dozens of cities and twenty states to enact a ban
    since 2010.[12]

    Career
In 2016, Brinton was a senior policy analyst for the Bipartisan Policy
Center, lobbying for updated regulations so nuclear waste can be used to
power advanced nuclear reactors.[13] In February 2020, the website of
Deep Isolation, a Berkeley, California, nuclear waste storage and
disposal company,[14] listed them as its Director of Legislative
Affairs.[15] In 2022, Brinton's profile at the Department of Energy
indicated their previous work with Breakthrough Institute, Clean Air
    Task Force, and Third Way.[3]

Yahoo! Lifestyle noted that Brinton "may be the first openly
gender-fluid person in federal government leadership" after they were
selected by the Biden administration to be the deputy assistant
secretary of Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition in the Office of Nuclear
Energy for the Department of Energy in January 2022.[9] In July 2022,
South Florida Gay News reported that, according to Brinton, while they
were "welcomed with open arms" at all levels of the organization, others reacted to their appointment with hatred and disgust, some making death
threats against the self-described "Nuclear Nerd".[16][3]

Brinton supports the use of interim siting for nuclear waste to
determine which sites and storage methods are best suited for future
    permanent repositories.[17]

In July 2022, Brinton posted a photo of themself on social media wearing
a dress alongside Assistant Health Secretary Rachel Levine (who is a
four-star admiral (non-military[18] and a transgender woman) at the home
of the French ambassador to the U.S. during a celebration for Bastille
Day. The photo of the two official U.S. representatives together went
viral and was mocked by Russian officials for showing America's
    acceptance of LGBT people.[19]

    Criminal history
In October 2022 Brinton was charged with felony theft in Minnesota after allegedly stealing over $2,300 of luggage from the baggage carousel
after arriving on an inbound flight. Brinton allegedly arrived without
any checked bags but still visited the baggage claim area, removed the
Vera Bradley roller bag full of women’s clothes, and the baggage tag
before taking an Uber to Brinton's hotel. Later, Brinton traveled with
the bag to Europe and returned to Dulles Airport with the bag. It’s
alleged that Briton lied to police initially before agreeing to give the clothes back. As of November 2022, Brinton is on a leave of absence from
the Department of Energy.[20] A hearing related to the criminal
complaint is scheduled for December 19, 2022.[20][21]

    Personal life
Brinton is married to Kevin Rieck.[22] They told Metro Weekly they are
    an animal roleplay enthusiast."

In June, Brinton made headlines after assuming the position in the

At the end of the day going forward in this context, it looks like

I thought the most interesting part of this story was that anyone
would fly on regular passenger service with $2,000 dollar luggage and
that anyone else would recognize that it was expensive luggage. I worked
for a client who sold some of the most expensive luggage you would find
in places like Macy's. They weren't even close to that league and I
don't think I would recognize expensive luggage if I tripped over it.

I would bet that this wasn't his only self-destructive behavior.

"Has Sam Brinton’s story always been too good to be true?

Was Brinton’s story contrived or embellished to manipulate high-profile leaders and elevate themself into the upper echelons of LGBTQ+ activism?"

"While this is a personal calamity for Brinton, the fallout faced by the
LGBTQ+ community could have easily been avoided. The red flags regarding Brinton were overwhelming and obvious to all who cared to see them. Unfortunately, some of America’s top LGBTQ+ activists and organizations
were willfully blind to Brinton’s shortcomings.

These organizations, such as the Trevor Project and the National Center
for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), ignored clear warning signs and
incontrovertible evidence because Brinton provided these groups with a seemingly perfect ex-gay survivor story to expose horrific conversion
    therapy practices and ideology.

While these advocates were well-intentioned, they took a shortcut,
looked the other way, and elevated them without ever asking: Is Sam
Brinton’s story too good to be true?

It remains an open question whether Brinton’s story was contrived or embellished to manipulate high-profile leaders to elevate themself into
the upper echelons of LGBTQ+ activism and achieve a level of celebrity.
But ex-gay conversion therapy needs no sensationalism, and Sam’s story,
if truly fabricated or exaggerated, adds to that destruction by
    undermining credible survivor stories."
