• finding campgrounds

From Ted Heise@21:1/5 to All on Sun Nov 27 22:20:13 2022
    Hi all,

What do the exerienced RVers use to find campgrounds? Is the
Allstays app worth the $9.99? Our preference would usually be for
places with fewer people (maybe fewer services?).

When we went a couple of years ago we had pretty good luck in
state parks (southern Indiana and into Kentucky). As I recall,
ReserveAmerica worked pretty well for finding and booking sites
then, but it doesn't look like it covers Tennessee or points
south. I'm kinda thinking of a trip that direction in the Feb-Mar
    timeframe.

    Thanks for any suggestions!

I use and have used several different apps, Allstays being one of them.
Most people have their own preferred app. I find the standard ones like
the Good Sam directory are a little generous in their ratings. I usually
just do a google search for campgrounds in the areas where I plan to
stay and check the reviews. Those require a "grain of salt" approach also.

In Indiana, I can recommend Charlestown State Park (if they have
openings for the dates you want). It's a short drive across the Ohio
    river from Louisville.

Whenever I'm headed to unfamiliar territory I start with Google
maps and Google searches. It's a frustrating experience that shows you
the limits of the internet. Many of the smaller places show up on Google
maps as a small black dot, or not at all. No matter how much searching I
do I always see campgrounds and other businesses that are not on
    anyone's map or list.

Here I start with the state campgrounds because that is always the
most luxurious and reasonably priced campgrounds and work from there. ReserveAmerica is a good source for finding many of these campgrounds,
but they probably leave out more places than they list.

I have no experience with the paid services. I saw one that
scrapes sites like ReserveAmerica so they can notify you when spaces
become available. It might be worth it if I was spending a lot of time
in the state parks on weekends during the busy season or if I needed
full hookups during the busy season. By planning ahead a little I don't
    need all that fuss.

Thanks, George and TB for the responses--helpful, and much
    appreciated.
