Our trip was pretty nice compared to some other people. On our
first day we're gliding through the Cascade mountains in the Detroit
ranger district. We came to a place where the traffic was stopped. So,
what can you do? We stopped too. It turned out that we were one of the
early arrivals at a traffic accident. We were only a mile or two from
the scene of a major traffic accident. The lines got to be much longer.
About 5 minutes after we arrived the first of 3 ambulances arrived. They
were the first among the usual array of emergency vehicles. Eventually
the ambulances left. Only one of them had their sirens blaring. The
other two were in no rush.

They were followed by two wreckers. One of them was carrying a
small SUV with the front completely smashed in. Air bags or no it was
unlikely that the people in the front seat survived. This was followed
by a big shiny black pickup that had been seriously t-boned. Those folks
could have survived--with some serious whiplash.

When we were finally able to leave the accident scene was pretty
spooky. There was only a wet spot in the middle of the highway and a few
scuff marks that looked like they might have been left there when the
pickup was pushed sideways. It looked like the poor slob in the SUV
never had a chance. He didn't leave any skid marks.
