"Powerful ‘Green Book’ exhibit in Tacoma captures perils, joy of Black travelers in 20th century America"
"The Washington State History Museum in Tacoma is presenting the
Smithsonian Institution touring exhibition “The Negro Motorist Green
Book,” opening Saturday and running through June 12."
"Many restaurants and hotels across the country refused to serve Black
people. A beating -- or worse -- might be in store for Black travelers
who arrived in the wrong place seeking a meal or a room or simply a
direct route to their destination. “Sundown towns” -- Oregon had dozens
of them -- banned Black people after dark."
"“In looking ahead … a trip to the moon? Who knows?” Green wrote in one edition, heralding his guidebook’s dedication to expanding as far as his customers’ travel dreams might reach. (That optimism didn’t extend to
most of Oregon, however. As late as 1956, only three establishments in
the entire state -- one hotel, one restaurant and the YWCA, all in
Portland -- were in the Green Book.)"
