SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — South Lake Tahoe City Council member Cody Bass
was arrested last month when he was reportedly found to be in
possession of illegal drugs after being stopped on suspicion of
driving under the influence.
At about 2:25 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, firefighters working near
Twin Bridges reported an “extremely intoxicated driver,” according
to the California Highway Patrol report.
A CHP officer stopped Bass’ vehicle, a Tesla with California plates,
at the Meyers Agricultural Station at approximately 2:39 a.m.
“The officer observed the driver showed obvious signs of
intoxication and requested he exit his vehicle,” the CHP report
states.
There was “white powder resembling cocaine” and a “crystalline
substance resembling methamphetamine” in the vehicle, continues the
CHP report.
Following completion of the CHP investigation, Bass was arrested on
several misdemeanor charges, including reportedly driving under the
influence, possession of an open container of alcohol or marijuana
and possession of methamphetamine and certain other narcotics that
in most cases carry a maximum sentence of one year in jail and a
maximum fine of $1,000.
Bass was booked in the El Dorado County Jail and his car towed.
While his legal counsel advised him not to comment on the incident
until he has been arraigned, Bass, who is out on bail, did want to
make one statement.
“The report came out before the lab tested the substances in the
car,” Bass told the Tahoe Daily Tribune. “I absolutely did not have
cocaine and I absolutely did not have methamphetamine, and the lab
results will show that.”
The city of South Lake Tahoe declined to comment.
The arrest came less than one week before Bass’ multi-year legal
battle over taxes for his cannabis business, Tahoe Wellness Center,
came to a close. There was a settlement trial on Friday, Oct. 1.
This is Bass’ first term on the South Lake Tahoe City Council. His
term expires in November 2022. He is also an ex-officio member of
the El Dorado County Transportation Commission.
