I'm surprised that thing is still there and in one piece. It's a
small free roadside attraction.
"During low tides, onlookers at the Boiler Bay Scenic Viewpoint can
still glimpse the only remainder of a ship that ran aground and exploded
more than a century ago — the massive boiler for which the viewpoint is named.
According to archived articles and information from Oregon State Parks
and Recreation, on May 18, 1910, a schooner steamboat named the J.
Marhoffer, captained by Gustav Peterson, ran aground on a beach known
then as Brigg’s Landing, just north of Depoe Bay, as it was headed from
San Francisco to Portland after unloading a load of cargo.
Trouble arose during the voyage when an assistant engineer, working unsupervised as the chief engineer was asleep in his cabin, attempted to
light a gas torch, which exploded and launched burning fuel throughout
the engine compartment of the vessel.
