It may be hard to remember now, but in the years preceding January 6,
2021, former vice president Mike Pence showed slavish, obsequious, stomach-churning devotion to Donald Trump. Indeed, right up until the
moment he certified the results of the 2020 election, Pence, by his own admission, was trying to figure out a way to help Trump get a second
term. Even after Trump sicced a bloodthirsty mob on him, and told the
world Pence deserved those chants calling for his hanging, the ex-veep
went to bat for his old boss, stonewalling the January 6 committee and
fighting a subpoena from special counsel Jack Smith. Incredibly, despite everything, Pence has still refused to commit to not backing Trump in a
general election, at least as of nearly a year ago.

This is obviously a disturbing, unbelievable level of loyalty, but for
Trump, it is not enough, hence his need to find a new running mate. And apparently, those under consideration understand that unless they
effectively confirm they would’ve helped him steal the election three
years ago, they don’t have a shot. Speaking to CNN on Thursday, Representative Elise Stefanik told Kaitlan Collins that if she had been
vice president on January 6, 2021, she “would not have done what Mike
Pence did,” adding, “I don’t think that was the right approach.”

To be clear, what Pence “did” was follow the law. Nevertheless, Stefanik falsely claimed “there was unconstitutional overreach in states like Pennsylvania,” insisting to Collins that “it’s very important that we continue to stand up for the Constitution and have legal and secure
elections, which we did not have in 2020.” (As numerous courts have confirmed, the 2020 election was legal.)

Lie, cheat, steal. Screw the constitution. That's what they do.
