"FLORENCE, Ore. -- Residents in the coastal city gathered Sunday afternoon to mark the 53-year anniversary of the November 12, 1970 exploding whale incident.

Neighbors said they know their community will always be remembered by the botched disposal of a sperm whale that washed ashore on a Florence beach, ultimately finding its way into popular culture over the years.

Television reporter Paul Linnman was sent out to cover the attempted disposal of the whale that was unlike anything seen before. Linnman said he had his doubts about the assignment, but very quickly discovered how unique the story would be.

“We said, 'what do you want us to do?' and they say 'they are going to dispose of this whale at the coast so we want you to cover it,'” Linnman said. “We said 'really?' and they said 'they're going to use dynamite' and I said 'okay, we're going.'""

The camera they were using was used for several years after this incident. I was reliably informed that it always smelled like whale after that.
