"The federal government owns about 640 million acres (2.6 million km2) of land in the United States, about 28% of the total land area of 2.27 billion acres (9.2 million km2)"

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_lands

If they closed 30% of this to offroad vehicles that would still leave 448 million acres open.

I particularly enjoyed this bit of bullshit:

"There is no evidence that users of these trails have been damaging them. Indeed, people cherish these lands. Go drive the trails and you will rarely encounter even a single piece of trash. That is why they have been in use for decades with no
    appreciable degradation."

If this was true that area would be an amazing exception. I've spent of lot of time on Federally owned land. Anywhere that humans have access to you will find plenty of trash and damage. Any area that is free of trash has probably been cleaned
recently. I have participated in these efforts in areas that were only open to hikers. We carried out a lot of trash.

The article that stinks posted links to this website:

    https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/03/21/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-takes-new-action-to-conserve-and-restore-americas-lands-and-waters/

"New actions to conserve, restore, and expand access to lands and waters. The Biden-Harris Administration is announcing a series of new steps to conserve, restore, and expand access to lands and waters across the country. These include a proposal to
modernize the management of America’s public lands, a plan to harness the power of the ocean to fight the climate crisis, a strategy to better conserve wildlife corridors, and new funding to improve access to outdoor recreation, promote Tribal
conservation, reduce wildfire risk, and more."

Because the government owns this land none of this is "overreach". These restrictions are mild compared to what you will find in our privately owned forest lands.

Note: I worked for the BLM for a couple of years.

OMG! A former BLM employee. I am so impressed. You have posted here many
times about the multitude of jobs you've had. Couldn't keep a job, eh? Apparently you weren't a very dependable employee. Or maybe the
supervisors couldn't put up with your smug, know-it-all, holier than
    thou attitude.

That was just one of those "full disclosure" things. There's no need to be impressed. I was very low level. It did give me a fun inner view of how the government works. The new District manager had worked on the budget in Washington DC and we were
paid to listen to him explain how that worked. They get paid for all sorts of odd stuff. If you want to "fight" fires, some of those gals and guys were making more during fire season than they made the rest of the year. I don't fight fires.

I get around a lot. I amaze myself with all the places I've been and things I've done. I've been all over North America many times. I've probably seen more of Mexico than most Mexicans, and a bit of Canada, here and there. I've been all over the
Western Pacific and across the equator a couple of times. I've been just about everywhere from Singapore to Korea. I've had a number of careers in a number of different jobs. I've worked for "Fortune 500" companies and "Fortune 50" companies. Along with
a lot of companies you have never heard of. Most of those guys no longer exist. If they do, they have a different name. As a result I've acquired a number of different skills. I believe in retiring early and often. This has given me a lot of time to
play, mostly outside. That's how I got interested in RVs. What a coincidence!

The clean public lands group in Bend is VERY active in cleaning,
    including dozens of abandoned RVs

In my area USFS had to close (100%) some areas near major roads this
year. They had been used as "unofficial" shooting ranges.
Besides the tons (literally) of spent casings, etc of just garbage, the
lead levels in the soils were between 100x and 10000x natural levels.

Yeah, there are a lot of groups and individuals involved in cleaning up the countryside. When I lived in the Bend area and volunteered at the High Desert Museum they managed to claim the cleanup rights on both sides of the highway outside the
museum. The advantage for us was that we got couple of small official signs on the highway acknowledging our contribution. I even found an electric blasting cap on one of those projects. I was also involved in a cleanup and restoration project sponsored
by the Forest Service at Green Lake. That's a popular hiking destination outside of Bend. It's also a good example of why we need permits and reservations in some areas to spread people out more.

When I was a youngster I was horrified to learn that the population would easily double in my lifetime. We have surpassed that. There are consequences to this. One of them is that we will need more regulations and enforcement on our public lands.
