However, Superintendent Tim Wilder said the flag will stay down.
"It is our flag, our state flag. It is the law that it is being
flown at the school, and we want it back up,” Joy Redwine said
while flying a Mississippi flag near South Panola High School.
Redwine is part of group known as “Mississippi on Guard.” She
told FOX13 she and other Mississippi flag supporters are going
before the Panola County School Board on Tuesday. They plan to
demand the state flags be raised again at South Panola High
School and Batesville Middle.
"Our Superintendent has refused to put our flag up. He is
breaking state law and we the people of Panola County feel like
if our children can be punished at school, then our
superintendent should be made to uphold the law."
Mississippi law does require the state flag be flown with the
United States flag at K-12 schools. However, attorneys and
lawmakers said the punishment for not doing it is vague.
Superintendent Tim Wilder could not go on camera to discuss the
issue, but he did tell FOX13 the state flags had not been flown
for years, and that would continue to be the case.
"We are going to take it to the next level,” Redwine said.
“There is another process that we can go through. We can file
charges on him personally."
The superintendent said there are much more important issues to
deal with, and academics will continue to be the focus in the
district.
