    and that was part of a 4-post "sub-thread" based on a post to a thread
    that was already, at that time, 20 *years* old.

    In the SCA they are actually hitting each other with 2" wooden swords. (Basically a 2" x 2" ratan solid stick) even in armor you leave with huge bruises and sometimes stiches. You learn to protect yourself with your shield, but you have all levels of
    fighters in battle. In tournaments you can have squires going up against knights. It gets pretty intense. :)
