Per a comment on his Facebook page, Ron Hearn, who did yeoman's work
posting the jazz birthdays here for so many years, passed away last
week.
His last Facebook post was on March 29 (also the date of his last jazz birthdays post here), and he indicated that he was having some health
issues and would be offline "for a few days or more". Obviously, the
health issues turned out to be more significant than he may have
expected.
I have not been able to find an obituary anywhere online, but will post
it if I do.

This news makes me very sad, Dave. I enjoyed perusing Ron's birthday
posts for years. I noticed they became a little less regular, then
ceased altogether, but for whatever reason didn't put the pieces
together. Rest in peace friend.

As near as I can tell, he maintained the birthday posts for close to 20 years. I found an old post from him in 2008 in which he announced the inability to continue the jazz birthdays project here, after speculating
that he'd been doing it for the past 8 years or so. The announcement
turned out to be premature, as he ultimately resumed posting them.
He also shared the posting duties with someone else for a while as well,
I think in the period before the 2008 announcement.
I did not know Ron personally, only through his many years of posts
here, but I was likewise sad to discover he had passed. I've been on
Usenet since 1991, and when someone who has practically been a fixture
in a newsgroup for many years suddenly goes radio silent, it's
unfortunately the case more often than not that the reason is health- related.

I think Ron's "helper" was none other than Jack Woker of Stereo Jack's
fame (http://stereojacks.com/). I would have guessed that he lent a
hand more recently than 2008, but time certainly flies. It looks like
Jack was probably involved at least as far back as 2001.
