Satellites. Stealing dreams would elude to spy satellites intercepting communications from other electronic devices or satellites. The star that came tonight refers to a satellite.

I've got an interesting take on this.
I mean I could be totally wrong but theories are theories and I would like to share...
Maybe the song is about Planet X, or the Planet X system. ( supposedly discovered in the early 80s)
The first thing he says is something about checking an orbital path and I know satellites could do that, but....
I will remember the star that came tonight, you will remember the star that came tonight. Sounds like he's talking about something specific ...that we're all going to remember.
And maybe saying in concert that it was about spy satellites is just a little bit more apeeling than "hey everybody this is about what's going to take us all out."
* again, just a theory. I like to keep an open mind.
