    I was listening to Raag Salag Varali todi. Can anyone point out the distance between this raag and Raag Bilaskhani Todi? I registered some deviation in the dhaivat-nishad usage in the upper middle octave. What could be other points of difference? Thank
    you!

    Look for Salagavarali in https://www.parrikar.org/hindustani/todi/

    Also, look for "Salagavarali" in rec.music.indian.classical posts.

    Read through the notes before posting here. :)
    Particular anecdote on this raag does not offer much insight. Hence posted here.

    Well, alright then... Bilaskhani Todi and Salagavarali are similar only in the first half, and that too only in the arohan (SrgP). After that, they are quite distinct.

    1. Bilaskhani has a madhyam (shuddha), Salagavarali does not.
    2. Bilaskhani has a komal dhaivat, Salagavarali has a shuddha dhaivat.
    3. In Bilaskhani, if you do a pancham, you have to go up after that, you *cannot* do a Pg ; in Salagavarali, you can do a Pg (the sequence is often used in the descent).
    4. In Bilaskhani, in the avarohan, you typically do a "Srnd" instead of Snd. In Bilaskhani, you can do a SnD.

    Quoting from https://www.parrikar.org/hindustani/todi/:

    The basic aroha-avarohana set of Bilaskhani may be stated as:
    S r g P d S”::S”, r” n d, P, d n d M g, r g r S

    For Salagavarali it is:
    S r g P D n D S”::S” n D P g (P)r g, r, S

    Correction. That should read:
    4. In Bilaskhani, in the avarohan, you typically do a "Srnd" instead of Snd. In Salagavarali, you can do a SnD.
