Dead on target, NINETY-FIVE YEARS AGO:

"Day after day the (middle class) world are witnesses
to the phenomenon of spreading poison among the people
through the instrumentality of the theater and the
cinema, gutter journalism and obscene books; and yet
they are astonished at the deplorable 'moral standards'
and 'national indifference' of the masses. As if the
cinema bilge and the gutter press and suchlike could
inculcate knowledge of the greatness of one's country
apart entirely from the earlier education of the individual."

It could happen that the SS would have heard your clam-filled versions
of "Negro music" and "jazz" and determined you stood little chance of popularizing the genres, allowing you to live in spite of those cultural blasphemies; however, one look at your tubby frame, your hideous
dentition and your pasty face would land you in a camp for defectives.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. You and I are usually
on the same page, but I draw the line with the author of that
particular book. I didn't recognize the paragraph you quoted, so
I Googled the first sentence. I was quite dismayed when I clicked
    on the first link...
