• RIP Ahmad Jamal

From Andy Evans@21:1/5 to All on Mon Apr 17 03:00:15 2023
I knew he was very old and one day he would pass. Still, it's sad news. I can't begin to say how much he meant to me - I saw him twice in London. He was a fine, fine man. He used to give the waitresses big tips at the end of his booking. Maybe through
running the Alhambra and knowing the business.

I particularly treasure the video attached. I've played it many times to other musicians as a model of how to enjoy being on stage and making music together. It doesn't get much better.

I don't think I knew him well until I streamed The Complete Ahmad Jamal Trio Argo Sessions 1956-62 (Mosaic) which is quite a treasure chest.

What I liked about Jamal was that he didn't over elaborate in improvisation and his relatively sparser texture on the piano is always a pleasure to listen to.

For me the greatest jazz pianist next to Art Tatum.

Rest In Peace, Ahmad Jamal. Two recently-issued archival releases from the 1960s on the new Jazz Detective label are worth an audition or 3.

Thanks! Very nice. Vernell Fournier went in 2000 and Israel Crosby in 1962. Ahmad was certainly a survivor. He recorded nice stuff even in his 80s.

Not forgetting Bud Powell, the one bop pianist on a par with Charlie Parker's talent on sax.

This is Bud Powell's Cleopatra's Dream. An amazing piece of pianism.
