Very satisfactory transfer of Thyssens Valentin’s barcarolles here - much better than Testament and Bibliothèque Nationale de France - I couldn’t tolerate the sound on either of those two. The interpretation is very close to my ideal. Diaphanous.
The transfer reveals that she had extraordinary delicacy, a beautiful tone and touch.

Problem is, she had nothing else besides "delicacy". This works
up to a point in the Nocturnes, but falls short in the Barcarolles,
which require a bit more flesh.

This is absolutely correct, and in the Barcarolles it’s a problem especially in the later ones, where I want to hear a bit of the choppiness of the sea.

For me Crotchet is slightly too forceful and weighty -- but I'm clearly getting myself into a bit of a pickle with the barcarolles because I have an idea in my head about what I want them to sound like, and I have the impossible task of finding someone
whose recording matches my idea. I imagine those colours you can see in soap bubbles in the sun.

Try, if you can find it online, Massimiliano Damerini and indeed Stott. Neither ideal, but not without interest for me. Thyssens Valentin is the most satisfying I've found.

The barcerolles are, I think, peak Faure.

transfer reveals that she had extraordinary delicacy, a beautiful
    tone and touch.

Problem is, she had nothing else besides "delicacy". This works
up to a point in the Nocturnes, but falls short in the Barcarolles,
which require a bit more flesh.

This is absolutely correct, and in the Barcarolles it’s a problem
especially in the later ones, where I want to hear a bit of the choppiness of the sea.
Maybe Faure had the Seine in mind rather than the sea.

Did you try Hubeau? He has a very personal approach to the Barcarolles, imo. TD (RIP) once made a case for Volondat. Others whose opinion I respect (no longer member of RMCR) also pointed in his direction,

I think Volondat’s got ideas about tempo and even phrasing - that’s good, he’s thought about it and isn’t on autopilot. The problem is that when he plays louder, or uses strong accents, it’s not so beautiful.

Hubeau is quite a jolly! Cheerful unpretentious barcarolles. More forceful than delicate. Not particularly nuanced in terms of touch, colours etc. I kind of feel that he’s just a pianist running through the music - not special or inspired.

Whatever Gramophone says (which I can’t read) Paul Crossley is definitely top tier Fauré Barcarolles. I will have to hear more by this pianist.

Thanks for this rec, I've been working my way through the nocturnes mostly though having never listened to Faure outside a few songs (and therefore unable to compare Thyssens-Valentin to anybody else). I just read Faure described as 'the French Brahms'
which I didn't get from the songs but now I understand. This is phenomenally 'tight' music and performance and I am really enjoying it.

Glad you’re enjoying the music and the performances - I feel the same as you. What I would say is that I’ve come to appreciate more the Fauré’s nocturnes - the barcarolles and preludes are fine too.

    Thyssens-Valentin is wonderful.
