• Holst "The Planets" - Non-British 'live' performances

From Kerrison@21:1/5 to All on Mon Apr 3 01:29:14 2023
"The Planets" would seem to be the one major orchestral work to come out of England that has been taken up internationally. Here are a few examples from YouTube, ones that were filmed and taken off the TV or DVDs, rather than non-visual audio-only
    recordings ...

Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Germany, conducted by Hugh Wolff ...

He made 2 studio recordings of that work--first with the VPO and later with the BPO.

I specifically said at the outset that my list included "live" TV or DVD performances ... ie: where you could SEE the conductor and orchestra in action on the screen. I know of course about Stokowski's and Karajan's studio recordings but if you can come
up with either of them conducting the work in FILMED performances, then we'd all be very interested in seeing them.

Thanks for adding a few 'live' performances to my own list, though I was surprised by the ending of Svetlanov's "Neptune." The score clearly says: "The chorus is to be placed in an adjoining room, the door of which is to be left open until the last bar
of the piece, when it is to be slowly and silently closed." In most live performances, the female choir very slowly walks away behind the scene until their singing can be heard no more. Svetlanov must have had a Russian translation of the English
directions, yet he had the chorus at the back of the platform in full view, quite contrary to Holst's intentions. In a recording studio, the engineers can of course slowly turn the sound down on the master panel. Actually, there are two female choruses,
marked "I" & "II" in the score, though whether they've ever been separated stereophonically on record, I don't know!

Literalist nitpicking. The planets really sound like this:
