For some reason other pianists like to race through the
opening of Brahms op. 76 no. 1. But's here's Walter Klien:

Very ugly steely sound. He should
have skipped this piece altogether.
May I respectfully ask what drives
you towards retarded pianists? Can
you point out the "exact moments"
that make you like them?

I recently found out that Klien is pronounced 'clean." I had no idea.

Standard German pronounciation.
He was Austrian. One of the most
metronomic, mechanical machines
ever on record. Steely, clangorous
pluted zound.
His pluted Brahmz recordingz may
be found here:

His Mozart PC 17 and 27 on Vox with
the Minnesota O/Skrowaczewski does
not, IMO, fit that description. For that
matter, neither do his Mozart Sonatas,
also on Vox.

Perhaps my taste is defective, but it is mine,
and I find those performances quite satisfactory,
the concertos more than that. YMMV. Sorry.

I find the expression "defective" quite curious; as if taste were something that could be repaired, as if you were a machine with a malfunction. I don't think that your taste is defective, Bob, you just have bad taste - maybe you can still develop a

I remember the sonatas being very bad (haven't listened to him playing Mozart concertos). And Dan seems to describe quite well what is wrong with Klien's approach.
If you think Klien's Sonatas are "quite satisfactory" and the concertos even "more than that", I wonder what pianists you consider non-satisfactory in Mozart? I mean, you can't get much worse than Klien...

Marc, Dan is pompous,
