I liked the work and will likely hear more from this composer.

i did not hear in it a new language or a truly significant statement in a preexisting idiom. My expectations may've been too high.

I subscribe to the HiFi Wigwam in the UK and the guys there listen to a lot of modern classical music, supposedly because it sounds nice on their systems. Never heard of most of these guys....

Grigori Frid, Bantock, Simpson, Cesari Pugni, Vytautas Barkauskas, Ina Boyle, Peteris Vasks......

Simpson's 9th is one of the great nines. Handley recorded them all. Simpson was a big Sibelius scholar, and it shows in his music, even if the impetus and drive is more Beethovenian.

More obscure stuff from HiFi Wigwam - Daniel Herskedal 'Call for Winter'

I gave Simpson a listen. Doesn't do much for me I'm afraid. I'm very lowbrow.

Don't think I would call Bantock modern...of those you list I've heard only him, Simpson and Vasks. The others, nothing yet.
