    You know, I heard François-Frédéric Guy play some Liszt and Debussy the other day, a concert. He can really make the resonances of a big modern grand ring out, it was fabulous to hear it. It doesn't come across in recordings so well.

    And I kept thinking how wonderful it would be to hear someone like FFG play this transcription.

    It never does. The sounds Richter, Berman, Petrov, Gilels
    or Rubinstein produced on stage, and the resonances of
    the hall, could not be fully captured on record. Sorry.

    Yes that’s true. However on the other hand you can sometimes sense, even through bad sound, that some pianists want to use piano decay in their performances - I think Albert Ferber in Debussy preludes II is like that, despite pretty poor sound on
    record.
